  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

I'm traveling into the mountains of Central Taiwan (old Formosa) later this month shooting a short on some very scenic tourist destinations above 2000m and it will be my first commercial shoot on the Contax 21mm. Since my last trip to Kyoto in May, I eventually located a 21 (just near home!) plus three zooms: 28-85mm, 80-200mm and 35-70mm to compliment my original collection of primes.

For this particular shoot which will be very fast paced, I'm packing the 21mm, a 50mm f/1.7 plus two zooms and a Mutar 2x converter. As I shoot on a Sony S-35 camera, I use a Metabones C/Y to E-Mount focal reducer to restore the Contax original field of view to the smaller sensor so I'm looking forward to a 90+ degree FoV from the 21mm!

If time and wi-fi connections permit, I'll post some Contax stills during the trip...

Looking forward to seeing your work Craig.

I've got a job in Portugal nect week and I have to travel very very light for it so probably only going to be about to take 3-4 lenses.

Would people say the 60mm macro can double up well enough as a regular run and gun non-macro in place of my 50mm?

Thinking of taking

18mm
28-85mm
80-200mm
And either the 60mm macro, the 85mm f1.4 or the 50 f1.7.

Ben the 60mm can def sub for a 50mm. We do it all the time!

Have fun!!

PS anyone notice we just slipped past half a million views? This thread never ceases to amaze me. You guys are amazing!! Who would have thought a love for Contax glass could be this contagious and sustaining? Remarkable.

If you can work with a 2.8 lense even if I never use the 85 1.4 pick the 60mm !

Well son of a bitch. Received the 21mm and looks to have signs of early fungus on the back element. WTF. Anyone ever had to deal with something like that?
Oh shit ! Sorry to read that Samir.
You should send it back to the seller asap. Fungus is unacceptable.
And put this lense in "quarantaine" far away from your camera and other lenses.

18 AEG at 6K FF, me like this F4 lense.
Next week I'll give it a run in Paris streets !

Yep, already in the mail back to the seller. I didn't want to risk mounting to any of my cameras and contaminating anything else. Drats. I guess I'll just wait until I run across one in person before I buy again. To fully inspect before buying.

With all those lines, and the tree in a high contrast cituation, I'm amazed by the render of this lense.
Compact nicely build sweet texture I don't get why it is so cheap, but I'm glad it is.

If some are interested here is a link with this frame at 100% size Tiff

I wasn't focusing on the tree by the way. ;)

You could swear there's a graduated ND filter on that shot!

You shoudn't swear too loudly, because no filters were used on this one even not a pola.
Just some quick power window in the raw file to get some details back.
24 fps 1/48 400 iso F5.6

If you are looking for a replacement in the meantime, try an Olympus Zuiko 21mm f3.5 Will need some grading to match, but a very nice, small and compact wide lens.

@Ben: I'm not sure the 18mm works with a Speedbooster, I never tried the real one, but a knock-off would have collided with the rear lens.

I have the 18mm on my shopping list, but if it doesn't work with my Metabobes Speedbooster and/or my Zhongi Lens Turbo II, then I'm not interested.

Can someone confirm compatibility?

Phil would leitaxing your 18mm to eos and then using the ef speedbooster sort out this problem
