Contax 17-35 zoom

Saw this just now. They don't come along to often. Can be used with a Canon adapter.

Shot the shuttle STS-122 with Zeiss Contax/Yashica 300mm fully manual on the Birger EOS mount and a C/Y to EOS adapter and worked very well. The RAW footage of the actual launch is available on REDRELAY (copyrighted but okay to play with in REDCINE and demo purposes).

Many of the C/Y Zeiss lenses are the same optics as the current Zeiss ZFs for Nikon, but they focus the "right" direction.

Interestingly, one of the few complaints in the still camera reviews of the Zeiss 300 F4 was that the focus throw was too long (about 315 degrees) but exactly what the cine guys want. I also have the 50mm F1.4 which is very nice also. They are intended to be my manual (and low light) backups to my Canon EF lenses on the Birger mount - but is all I have to work with right now.

These can actually be converted to EOS mount. Bear in mind though although it's a good lens it's still not up to the 17-35mm Nikkor or even close to the new 14-24 f2.8 Nikkor.

Evin,

I'm not sure about that Nikon 17-35mm is better than Zeiss 17-35mm.

Also I do have Nikkor 17-35mm.

Have a look at this test:

"What's the best wide angle zoom?

Short Answer:
1. Contax N 17-35mm f2.8
2. Nikon 17-35mm f2.8 AFS
3. Leica 21-35mm f3.5-4 / Canon 16-35mm L f2.8
4. Sigma 15-30mm
5. Sigma 12-24mm
6. Tamron 17-35mm"

About new Nikkor 14-24mm all the best review texts but I still have to test on RED.

I know that test and I trust the tester. But take a look at page 11 in part two of the test and tell me what you think about the color fringing.

This page here.

Interesting, I haven't seen anything like that on my D3 with the 17-35 Nikkor.
It could be sample variation, but bear in mind the Red won't see out to the edge like the full frame 35mm cameras used in these tests.

Undoubtedly though the best of all the is the new 14-24mm F2.8 Nikkor, and 16-9.net seems to have an Nikon-EOS adapter capable of setting the perture on the G lenses.

The advantage here is given to the Contax because it can be modified to auto focus on an EOS body whereas the Nikkor cannot. That is not a consideration for us with both Nikon AFS and Canon EOS Birger mounts.
The Contax EOS conversion is about $600 I think. Assuming Chuck can get the lens for $1500 that's over twice the price of a used Nikkor for no real performance advantage, at least as used on Red. That being said both are very good lenses and will probably outperform the Mysterium anyway.
