  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CONTAGION

I watched it last night. Liked. A lot.

Jim

From the Variety review:
"Armed with Red's new 5K Epic-X "Tattoo" cameras, Soderbergh squanders all that resolution on downright ugly footage that makes exceptional moments such as street riots and military roadblocks look as unremarkable as scenes set in conference rooms and bio-safety labs. The art of film lighting, already mostly lost in cinema's transition from black-and-white to color, suffers a deathblow from digital cameras that can make do with available light. What energy "Contagion" can muster owes to Cliff Martinez's electronic score; the rest is routine."

I've not seen CONTAGION yet but clearly this reviewer already has an issue with modern cinema and technique. Also the fact that they write that it was shot on "Epic-X Tattoo" is a contradiction in terms.

Also Jim posted in an earlier CONTAGION thread:
"100% MX. And Steven called the grade"

Very impressive how Steven can weave a complex story with so many characters and have it feel very fluid and natural. I found it just as engaging the second time as the first. I liked it alot but I'm not shaking anyones hands at NAB anymore :)

Am I reading this wrong or did they just offend every DP who has been shooting for the past 60 years or so?

Went to this movie because I was looking forward to see a major feature shot all on an Epic ... my impression was similar to the Variety review, however, if Soderberg's intention was to have it look something like a documentary then that is a creative choice. We have just got our Epic and our initial test shots have simply amazed us even before we put the footage through Redcine-x. Except in a few scenes didn't see the same magic in Contagion.

Contagion was shot entirely on the Red One MX.

Amy Taubin's review in Artforum begins: "WHEN I LEFT THE THEATER after I saw Steven Soderbergh's Contagion, my hands were shaking so hard that it took me fifteen minutes to text the words: WHAT A SCARY, CONVINCING RIDE. "

I didn't see any indication this might be the case from the trailers. That happens sometimes. The trailer isn't a good indication of what the movie is about.

That quote alone made me discount most of what the reviewer said, and I haven't seen the film yet. I skipped the spoilers of course.

Does anybody know if they did a 4K finish for IMAX presentation? I'm going tonight but do not want to be suckered into seeing a 2K finish with an IMAX logo.

The place I saw it on IMAX in LA looked amazing, well worth it even if it's 2k

My only gripe about the movie was the cgi at the end..looked terrible

Funny thing is I didn't see any CGI that you mentioned after seeing it last night. Will you PM me and explain?

Contagion shot to the top of the box office, as one would expect of such a high-profile thriller, but its spread was contained at an estimated $23.1 million on close to 3,900 screens at 3,222 locations.

Soderberg finally nailed it to get the box office with a film that he shot on RED ONE MX himself.

Also producers and investors' attention turned back to him with his latest box office Contagion.
