  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Contagion- Soderbergh...

I can see AC's sweating, but not DIT's, since r3d's have been in the wild for 2 years now... so a jump to 5k will not be that bad for them.

But learning a "Beta" camera on a feature, I'd be scared

I've been an AC and DIT at the same time on a feature and that was kinda sweaty... but I got a towel

4k release?

4k release?

Any chance the movie DCP will be released to cinemas worldwide in 4K format?

Thanks a lot.

I saw the digital trailer for "Contagion" along with the trailers for "Spider-Man" and "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" -- those two looked great... but even given the semi-documentary style of "Contagion", I saw some image problems that I suspect won't be in the final version. Frankly the word that came to mind when I saw the trailer was "Rec.709" and all that implies, you know, orangey "Sony" reds & skintones, clippiness, etc. I don't know how the trailer was put together, maybe from HD dailies, but I'm a bit surprised the studio would release it like that. At the same screening, the trailer for "Spider-Man" looked fantastic so it can't be a projection issue.

Have you seen The Informant or the Girlfriend Experience? If so, was it like either of those at all? At times those movies went fairly orange/red/tungsteny... I have a feeling Soderberg might intend for that kind of image (don't know why; it's not very pleasing in even a "raw/documentary-style" sense)... like he goes to 5600k while under tungsten practicles regardless.

No, I'm not talking about the use of mixed color temps, I'm just referring to the general look when you work from a Rec.709 HD image for film release, the way the colors look. It's subtle but distinctive at the same time. It just stuck out when compared to the trailers for "Spider-Man" and "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". Now that second one also has some funky color effects but they look deliberate, the cold wintery look and those scenes that look like faded color negative being reprinted, where the highlights are shifting to the yellow-green but the blacks have a blue cast to them. It's an interesting film artifact but created digitally, without the grain that aged negative would give you.

1080P trailer now at this link on Apple:

I see a lot of mixed lighting issues here and there, but I think whatever weird color is there is more a creative choice than a technical flaw. Strictly my opinion.

Looks like a very compelling movie.

I brought this up some time ago and it wasn't taken too well here. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Though not directly related to the latest RED, this discussion reminds me of something. Remember the warehouse scene in the Limey? GREEN! And the blown out view of the loading dock? But as he said in the commentary, he was happy to leave it that way.

I posted this in off topic, but feel it deserves the extra coverage ( :

Amy Taubin's review in Artforum begins: "WHEN I LEFT THE THEATER after I saw Steven Soderbergh's Contagion, my hands were shaking so hard that it took me fifteen minutes to text the words: WHAT A SCARY, CONVINCING RIDE. "

So, when it was all said and done, how much of the film was shot with the MX, and how much with the EPIC, Jim?

100% MX. And Steven called the grade.

BTW... I thought the movie was terrific.

I expected as much after watching the B-rolls. Footage, aside from the lighting and grade of which I'm not a big fan of, looks great nonetheless.

Anyone happen to know what kind of lenses were used?
