Contagion- Soderbergh...

Hong Kong

We are excited to be working on this feature with the Soderbergh editorial crew. These guys are true RED pros. They are very, very detailed about their workflow, and very dynamic in their productions, so we built them a custom box with our nextLAB software on it. We fabricated a drive chassis in our machine shop and were able to stuff in 8 2TB drives, a boot drive and a slot loading dvd drive into a 12-core Mac Pro tower. We were a bit jealous when they took it actually. They are currently managing media, archiving, syncing, and transcoding to Avid media on the box.

Here's a glance at the configuration.

Sexy.

Can you tell us a bit more about their box? Are they creating LTOs themselves on the fly? Are they using a RAID-5 or 6 for the hard drives? And what RAID card was employed?

Thanks!

It's a RAID 6 so there's about 12 usable TB on the box. They are creating LTO 4 tapes on our nextLAB software, which makes it pretty easy to manage the process. It's all standard tar so they can be read back anywhere.

So the word on Twitter is that "Contagion" starts shooting in Chicago today. Jim previously said Soderbergh would start using Epics once "Contagion" moved to the US. Someone in Chicago needs to try to snap some pics for us!

Contagion is filming at 17 East Monroe Street in Chicago at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel for the next four days. http://twitter.com/#!/b4thetrailer/status/27799504584

I think this is a big deal because it would likely be the first time the Epics have been used without Jim or Jarred on set providing instant support.

That is a sweet tower, building few towers to take to the new Studios in Italy, so would be very interested in finding out more about this config. pricing and etc.

Please email me and or PM me Michael, if you guys can do this for me as well.

Personally, I would be hesitant to shoot on a prototype camera. Too many things that could go wrong.

Apparently Jim's word isn't good enough for some. Or some didn't read the whole thread before posting :P

Chill out. Jim says Contagion will be shooting Epic, it will shoot Epic. Even if half the movie is shot R1MX there's no reason for people to freak out.

Contagion will use EPICs when they get back. It was just too soon to get a couple of things done SS needed so we asked him to begin with R1 MX. No big deal except here on the forum.

Jarred and I are so busy working on all the cool stuff here that we don't have the time to catch up on everything. This place shouldn't go crazy when we are gone.

They are back in the States. Not calling Jim a liar. Some things must have come up that prevented it. No big deal just would have been nice to see the Epic leaving the lab.

I wasn't chastising you, Rieger. There are others that have posted since Jim's note that are still treating this as though it's the end of the world- no pun intended.
