Audio isn't my primary area, so i would appreciate any clarification!
Normally audio is all off camera but there are times when it's an enormous help to record audio direct on the camera for those times when time and people are limited.
Now i understand the V Lock expander has a 3.5mm audio jack, but is that a TRS input - so balanced audio can go in?
Most of my audio gear is XLR and Phantom Power based, clearly i cannot drive a mic direct. So i have two issues, the 3.5mm jack and phantom power.
I could get an inline power supply for the mic (NTG-3), then i'm sure i can find an adaptor for XLR to 3.5 audio. Is that going to be good enough - the preamps in the Epic-W don't appear to be raved about.
Would i need some kind of outboard pre-amp instead?
I'd considered the rode link as well, i could pop a transmitter onto the NTG-3 and that would sort the power option out and then the receiver is 3.5mm jack and that would sort the camera side out - this seems pretty neat actually - reducing cables too. But if this was so neat why isn't everyone doing it?
I don't really want to mount a mic on the camera, the local noise would be a nightmare. But running a wireless boom would be interesting, so long as the signal can be monitored.
I'm sure i'm one of many with the same questions but i've not really found the answers, if i've failed to see something here please direct me to the thread!
many thanks
