  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Confusion about which gamma to monitor/shoot in?

Apologies if this specific has been asked before, but I couldn't find it in a search. I'm shooting on a scarlet-w and I'm a bit confused on which color space/gamma combo i should be monitoring in. If i run a normal display lut on log3g10/rwgrgb its much darker than that dragoncolor2/redgamma4, due to the gamma curve. it seems like lots of people without a DIT run dc2/rg4, but doesn't that usually mean that it'll actually be visually underexposed when you grade in post using ipp2? Or do i have that backwards/not understand something?

It actually is. Highly depends on what's the post process (I'm not using IPP2 transforms in Resolve for quite a while), but my basic findings - IPP2 Medium Contrast Medium Highlight Rolloff - really close to DC2/RG4, and the softer option you choose be it contrast/rolloff - the more there will be difference in the curve and the footage will look "underexposed". Overall you can set your preview to ungraded, with Log3g10 and REDWideGamutRGB, and then apply a corresponding IPP2 LUT in the monitor (3rd party one) - luts can be downloaded on red.com
If you're not using the IPP2 transforms, but using DavinciWG - it's ok to shoot in DC2/RG4 and then use log3g10/REDWideGamutRGB as a starting point in Resolve. IPP2 transforms can be recreated with curves then, if desired.
