I have 2 Macbook Pro laptops, one is a first-gen Intel machine (15'' 2.0 ghz processor), the other is a last-gen aluminum Intel machine (17'' 2.6 ghz).

I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade and FCP 7.

I loaded Snow Leopard on the 15'' machine and FCP 7 on the 17'' machine.

I did not load FCP 7 on the 15'' machine, basically because the local hard drive is too small to support the 45 gb required (I may do a lighter weight custom install, but am hoping to get my questions answered first...)

Build 20 footage will play back on the 17'' machine with FCP 7 but not the 15'' machine with Snow Leopard. I get the green screen.

Do I need to load FCP 7 to get access to Quicktime X? This doesn't seem to make sense to me. Shouldn't Quicktime X be included in Snow Leopard? I'm confused. Shouldn't I be able to play back Build 20 footage on my older 15'' machine just with the installation of Snow Leopard?

And is FCP 7 just adding Quicktime support that allows Build 20 playback automatically, without an additional plug-in?

Any help in clarifying this mystery would be much appreciated.

Last mystery - I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Tower (3 ghz Octo) and now it won't install FCP 7...when I click the "Install" button, it greys out, re-appears and nothing happens.

Yet I had no problem installing it on my 17'' laptop (the one without Snow Leopard)

Very frustrating - has anyone else had a similar experience?

Is there a preferred order of installation?

This is the worst upgrading experience that I've ever had, since I first started in Final Cut 1.0...kind of a cluster****

As far as playing back the footage goes, have you installed the RED Quicktime codecs? It might be a dumb question, but it's the first thing that comes to mind. Snow Leopard/FCP7 don't include any of the RED stuff natively. You still need to download and install the stuff from red.com/support

As for installing FCP on the Mac Pro.... Dunno. Again, possibly a dumb question, but are you trying to install the *same* version of FCP? (I.E. The same serial #) FCP is network locked, so it won't allow multiple versions with the same serial to run on the same network. That said, with FCP 2, at least, it did that check when you started an application, not on install. Dunno.

Did you install QT7 during the SL installation?

According to the insane Ars Technica Review, it seems, that the new QTX does not have much of editing/transcoding/exporting abilities - those will be added later.

QT7 in SL is now an optional installation, and runs PARALLAL with QTX, for applications, that need it.

That might be the reason, why you cannot install FCP - your QT7 is missing.

I am struggling to run AE and Premiere with RED on a SL .... so yeah, it is quite a hike...

I second that idea.

thanks, peeps - most of my issues resolved, sometimes it takes writing them down and listening to get a fresh perspective...

Build 20 footy now playing back happily on both laptops -

last problem still remains, although i have successfully diagnosed it, i have no clue how to fix it...

still can't install FCP 7 on my Tower - seems that when I did the Snow Leopard upgrade (or maybe a global upgrade via "Software Update"...), i knocked out the installer - the Tower now won't install anything. I thought this was an issue with my FCP 7 upgrade disks, but now it is clearly a broader issue.

The new question is, what is the bit of software that enables new software installation? And if I can't install stuff, then how can I install the installer, once I find out what it is?

Turns out that there is an insoluble authentication issue, and an Apple engineer is working on it now - "should have a solution for you in 3-4 days" -- so this will not be a simple fix--

argh. my best computer knocked out for the moment - still works but can't be upgraded...

thought some of you might find this useful though - he directed me to this internal document which catalogues all of the apps that Snow Leopard is currently incompatible with:

http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/

quite a list...i bet the software updates come fast and furious...

not that i can update any of them until the fix is in....

Why didn't you do a clean install on an empty or erased drive? Seems its a standard operating procedure on a OS upgrade.

Because,
The Snow Leopard upgrade is much cheaper than the Retail disc... Clean installs are the most stable, especially for a Pro workstation.

There is an option to do a clean install (even on the $29 version) it's just hidden in the menu somewhere. I'm pretty sure it will install on a blank disk too.

I can guarantee that Quicktime 7 is not missing - the framework is installed by default (in fact, since Quicktime X is so immature, it actually uses Quicktime 7 to do most of it's processing transparently to the user and application. This is just so next time they update the OS, they can include a fully functional version of Quicktime X, and rip out the old QT7 framework without applications breaking). It's just the player that is not installed, and that shouldn't really make any difference to Final Cut. You might want to install it if you own a QT Pro licence though.

> not to get off topic to much, but I did format my drive with disc utility and did a fresh install of SL with the upgrade disc.. no hidden option at all for me. It may look at the system ID to see if the system shipped with 10.5 if any others have not been able to do the install from a fresh drive, but i can't back that up.

Useful? You must be an arch angel or perhaps related. What a great thread. Motion 3! After Effects! CS3! All effected for now and so many more...
It's like we're all out there trying to negotiate in a mine field. Thank you!
