Hey everyone, I'm just about done with my first short film that was shot on Red and edited it using proxies. I know that I have to use Clipfinder to relink it with the R3D file to get it back up to 2-3k resolution, but what's the process to do it?

1. Export xml from FCP
2. Open Clipfinder (CF)
3. Under "tools" you'll see: run conform on FCP xml
4. Choose your XML (the 3 dots) and save your resulting xml (the other 3 dots)
5. Choose your toplevel r3d directory
6. Set and hook off to: Replace with H proxies"
7. Set:Set timeline to 1920 x 1080 or 2k, depending on what format you want to deliver at and shot at
8. Hit the "conform" button
9. Wait till it finnishes
10. Drag your new XML into FCP. Remember that the new timeline will have exactly the same name as the old, so you might want to make a new bin to drag it to...

Cheers

There are two alternative roads you can travel down in the conform process.

1. conform from _P proxy to _F (or from/to any _* proxy)

A. export xml from FCP
B. open clipfinder
C. menu: tools --> Run Conform on FCP XML
D. "input xml file" browse to XML generated in FCP
E. "XML output file" choose location for new XML
F. Select "replace clips with" desired proxy size
G. Add in "clip directories" using the + all volumes / folders the R3Ds reside in
H. run conform
I. results panel should show that all clips have been replaced
J. import XML into FCP (change sequence settings as required)

2. Conform from FCP XML to Redcine-X

A. export xml from FCP
B. open clipfinder
C. menu: file --> Import Clips From FCP XML
D. select <pathurl> tag, import subclips, merge mode: none, add 0 handles (or add handles if needed) (you will now see a list of all used clips with their edited in/out points)
E. select in preferences: general --> Redcine-X application (browse to the application), show columns --> sequence position
F. in the main window click on the "sequence position" header (you will now see your clips in their correct order)
G. menu: edit --> send to Redcine-X timeline
H. you will now see a timeline in Redcine-X that can be graded and exported normally (the clips can be exported as one whole clip or individually that can be conformed back to FCP as well)

Hope this helps and I didn't leave any details out.

best,

noel

Didn't have the RCX info, though... -:) Haven't tried it actually...

I guess for it to work, your timeline needs to be only one track high and pretty well cleaned up.

A clean XML always helps (especially speed changes!!) but generally if it can be conformed normally it will work with Redcine-X. Also works great with Avid Filmscribe XMLs.

Thank you again Hans!

I was gonna ask about speed changes as I heard before about there being potential issues with that. There's some slow motion shots as well as some that I sped up in FCP. Between the two ways to do it, is there a preferred way when it comes to that?

If you're playing around with speed changes, you're probably going to run into snags no matter which route you go. Which the Clipfinder->FCP->Color workflow might seem smoother, Color tends to choke on speed changes.

Best bet, as was alluded to earlier, is to make a 'clean' XML for the conform. Copy your sequence and clear out all the FX and speed changes. Conform the clean sequence, using either the CF->FCP or RC-X method, then reapply all the FX and changes to your rendered files.

Anyone tried if FCP XML - Clipfinder 2.5 - Redcine 321 works?

Would like to stay away from transcoding everything to FCP and work with proxies in FCP instead.

Would like to know before buying, but Hans didn't know.
Anyone?

So I finally got to try the conforming today but so far the results aren't what I've wanted. When I've tried conforming, the logging report says that 150/276 clips were replaced and comes up with a list of things it wasn't able to find. I wasn't able to tell whether some were audio clips or which clips they couldn't find but the files haven't been moved at all since they were initally set on.

When I've tried importing in the XML to FCP, just to see if it'd work, it comes up with a warning saying that 'non-critical errors were found' and lists what they are. But the XML doesn't import. I NEED HELP!!!!

If you're working with a full edited timeline you're going to get a fair number of unreplaced clips and non-critical errors. Those are the audio files and non-RED clips. If you've got unconnected media (AKA "Audio" for those of us who are Colorists and never get the audio media) you'll get the "Non-Critical Errors" warning. It's basically the same as the "Reconnect Media" thing that pops up when you open a project.

As far as the XML not importing... Hrm. One thing to keep in mind is that it imports with the exact same name as the timeline that was exported. So check and see if you've got a duplicate. Also try importing it into a new project and see if anything shows up.

I did end up with duplicates and opened up one to see what works. They all come up with media offline and to reconnect media, but so far it hasn't reconnected yet

Also, all of my clips are very zoomed in. I reimported the XML but as a full size proxy instead of R3D's and the footage showed up, but the color correction from Red Alert isn't showing and the zoom, despite being at 100%, is way too zoomed

Ooooooor... there is a far far simpler way to do this...

You can just render the PROXIES out as your final master.
Replace the S or M proxies with the (HD sized) H versions, Just a simple replace media tick in FCP and grade and render out as PRO RES 422 HQ straight from the time line.

Here is an AD we edited in the plane on the way back to AUS. All done created from start to finish using the Proxies, graded and mastered via FCP to 2:1 (still as proxies) and exported from my time line as PRO RES to tape, to the FILM LAZER people for film release they received a tiff sequence from the FCP PROXIE time line on a little pocket drive.
This whole cinema and TV ad was created on my laptop in Airport lounges and Plane seats.

End result was perfect and the lazar cine print people said is was the cleanest sharpest material they have ever received and the final print look amazing on a 60 foot screen.

Proof that you don't need a big chain of machines or a 10 step process to get a file into a grading box, then have to re-conform again in another box.. to get your final product out the door at a high level.

The Hi res download button will spit out a 720p version for you.

Enjoy and have fun.
