  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'd like to transcode everything to prores SQ (or even h.264?) for offline and then use Color to do the final grade using the raw files and export to 2K prores HQ.

is there an easy way to do this? I recall editing with the M proxies and "sending to Color" providing instant access to the r3d's at 2k, but I'm not sure how to do that with transcodes QTs.

any ideas?

THANKS! :)

thanks Joe, exactly what I was looking for.

2 questions:

So you've found that quarter res debayer is enough for 720p? I only tried it once, but it looked bad to me. In your experience it's looked good enough?

AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, you've reminded me about Color's limitations with transitions, layers and filters. I anticipate this project being effects heavy (editing-wise), so in this kind of case, what would you guys recommend in order to get a graded 1080p or 2K project

THANKS! :)

If you're offlining, who cares what it looks like. The only thing that counts is what the finished grade looks like. If you're grading R3D's in Apple Color, your chucking those 720 transcodes anyway.

There's this too...

...which I've never gotten to work because when you get to the part about "Select all the RED clips in your timeline (which is easy, because they’re the ones on V1 & V2, right?) and choose “Capture...” from the context menu", FCP opens Log and Capture, not Log and Transfer. There's also the deal-breaker about using FCP L&T to transcode in the first place, which seems crazy when you have an 8-core Mac and FCP is not multi-processor aware (and RedRushes and ClipFinder are).

Actually, my not having access to 10 bit HD monitoring makes Apple Color a moot point for me anyway, but I at least like to make sure my data and asst editing workflow will carry through for whoever ends up doing it. So I test sample sequences with the post house first to make sure.

ok, couple more things.

I did a test with different debayering settings. Quarter res w/ 720 still looks weird to me, though maybe not as bad as I remembered. However, I accidently did a second render where I chose 720p, but DIDN'T check the check box, which of course spit out a 1K version. Personally, I think the 1K version looks better blown up full screen than the 720p version. if that's the case, would it be easier on the system to edit the possibly superior looking 1Ks? and is there any problem down the pipeline editing 1K rather than 720p?

Also, I'm realistically not going to get to do a 10bit grade either, probably just using an HD set. In that case is it less important to go to conform to the raw files? Should I just apply apply a base look to the clips in RED Alert, render all the clips to prores, edit, and then do any further corrections in Color to the prores files?

Thanks for any additional info! :)

Full-debayer is very important, if you have to process 2-3 Hours of Footage using a Full-debayer then you either have 72+ Hours of Free time or Several 8 Core machines. If you have that time, then its worth it to encode all the Footage to Pro-Res for Editorial..

Its always been easier for me to make 1080 Half-Standard as Offline then conform to R3D in Crimson / RedCine or Clipfinder/AfterEffects. So the Full Debayer only takes 8 Hours or Less(dependant on Length) and I'm Bringing 10bit Uncompressed into Color, instead of some weird R3d Conforming Mess that Apple Calls a workflow. (I'm well aware that it works, but I dont trust what it does to the files during the render, in addition to all the errors you get from different types of Edits, Speed Changes, Length, etc...) And dont forget the looping bug.

Ok, I'm still going to have to test with the editor, but I'm seriously leaning towards spending a few hours doing solid "one lights" on our 140 takes, and redrushing a bunch of 1K prores files at Quarter debayer.

So, what would be the simplest way to conform the final edit to full debayered 1080p prores HQ?
