Hello Reduser,

I made a offlineediting with Avid composer using metafuze to transcode the R3D. Files into NDxHD. After Editing i would like to conform the EDL on Quantel Version 4.1 with the R3D Files which is not working.
Offline editing worked well-->exported a edl and a aaf (in CMX3600 and also in Red16) --> imported in Quantel without problem but when i push the confirm button to confirm with the R3D files which are on a external HDrive it cant find the Files.
Somebody an idea ?

Greetings from Cologne Germany

The issue may be that MetaFuze uses the metadata that inside the header of the R3D file, and not the actual filename seen at the directory level. So the last two characters of the TAPE name do not match. Try the truncate option in EDL Manager to come up with a 4 character source to see if that helps.

Confirming Avid EDL in Quantel

Hello Michael,

thanks for you reply, i tried that but its still not working....

What is it what Quantel needs ? Is it the Filename or the Tapename ?

I don't know what Quantel needs exactly - but I wanted to alert you that the tape name from MetaFuze does not match the file name. Perhaps someone will jump in and let us know what it expects.

Michael

Hello Michael,

i checked the Tapename and metafuze changes the name by putting the year in the name e.g. if the red Tapefile is A001_C002_06025C metafuze will put the year in like A001_C002_090602
i checked confirming in quantel when editing in quantel and it searches for the file by the tapename...At the Quantel support strangly nobody was able to help me...

Yes... there is a heads up in the Step by Step Guide that MetaFuze uses the shoot date since that is what it was seeing in the SDK. We are looking to change that for a future version. So systems expecting the full 16 characters of the file name will not work. That's why I was wondering if a shortened version using just the reel ID and timecode was enough for Quantel to conform. For example, Final Cut works with 4 or 8 but not the full 16. So if a shortened version could be made, perhaps that will work.

Hey Haris

The top Quantel RED guy have unfortunately quit. But fear not. It works. =) I have done it and we do it daily. Though we don't use Metafuze1.2 but I did some tests with that when it came out and I got it to work. Don't remember straight up how I did but found this in an old thread about the final MetaFuze 1.2

"Some changes from the alpha regarding how it builds up tapename and so. But this new way works for us to. We add the clip name as a comment in the EDL and choose that as clipname in the eQ and choose to limit it to 16 char to get rid of the extra "_" metafuse adds."

So if I remember this correctly. When you end up in EDL manager you choose to add the clipname as a comment in the edl. that's an option somewhere there. Then in the eQ you choose to limit clipname to 16 chars and you should be good to go. Damon Hawkins should know all RED over at quantel. Or Ian Stoner. From my nagging on them pretty much all of the Ians or Stus should know. ;)

Sorry... But don't remember straight up how it was with MF1.2 and the eQ. If you don't get a hang on it I am more then willing to look closer at it next week for you.

btw... You have read this, right? http://quantel.com/repository/files/Whitepapers_REDQworkflowfeb09a.pdf

As long as the user doesn't change the clip name...

Michael

Hi,
Just a thought: if the original R3D name is kept under the name or the tape ID column, you can decompose a copy of your final sequence, put all the created clips and subclips in a bin, than mark the column where the data is saved, and use ctrl+d to duplicate the content of this column and choose the tape column when your asked which column you'd like to overwrite. than export the decomposed seq, and you should be good to go.
i tried this workaround before for other uses, but it sounds to me that it might work. depending on you having the needed metadata somewhere in the clips.
hope it helps, Amit.

Hi Amit,

thanks for your idea. I will try it on monday. Not to change the clipname its pretty annoying because if you have a bigger project you turn crazy editing with the origin clipname. Some people also told me that its possible to edit the EDL manually via editor or else to change settings. Anyway a correct workflow looks different in my eye and i think that the problem doesnt seem to be so big and could be easily changed by the developer.

Thanks Guys

Haris

From the Quantel RED Workflow White paper it looks like you can limit it to look at the beginning of the tape name which would solve your problem.

Look at page 6 & 7.

http://www.quantel.com/repository/files/Whitepapers_REDQworkflowfeb09a.pdf

Been doing a lot of 4K DI tests on various systems (Baselight 8, Pablo Neo, Lustre and Filmmaster) over the past few weeks. No problems conforming the EDL.

Our offline is Avid DNxHD36 from RED Rushes, then a RED 16 EDL.

Hi Jonathan,

to change the Tapename according to Quantels whitepaper didnt work out. After loading the edl in quantel by transcoding it to a aaf, quantel was just not able to find the Raw Files on a external HD. I tried also to use the clipname as a origin name and it didnt work out.

Haris -

Can you send me a zip of your bin with the sequence to my email at Avid?

Thanks -

Michael

Hello Michael,

i will send you the bin on monday because actually i am not at work.

Thanking you in anticipation

And attach a screenshot of your conform settings with the AAF loaded in on the "desk". As I said, we have conformed these things without any problems so it's most probably something that's overlooked. =)

Hello Henrik,

what was working with us was the confirming the AAF with the Original RAW-Files when editing in Quantel. So we just used the same conformsetings but this time loaded in an EDL from AVID and transformed it in AAF. Quantel couldnt find the files. It would be cool if you could tell me step by step how you guys were doing it. How did your conform setings look alike ?

Regards from Cologne

I will install metafuze again and run a test here. I will, hopefully, have an answer for you tomorrow depending on if I can get any eQ time today.

Mkay... Now I have it nailed down with screen shots for you. :)

1. First we set up MetaFuze
http://www.irry.com/neo/bilder/temp/mekaniken/MFuze1.2.and.eQ.conform/01.MfuzeSettings.jpg

Note the bug that it adds "_" to the clip name. We transcode and create ALE (ALE is not required but it's easier to import in the avid that way, atleast that's what I think =))

2. The ALE imported in Avid
http://www.irry.com/neo/bilder/temp/mekaniken/MFuze1.2.and.eQ.conform/02.Avid.ALE.Imported.jpg

"File name" under clip name. Far from optimal. But someone suggested to copy whole columns so that might be a solution for that, copy clip name column into tape name or something.

3. We go into EDL manager
http://www.irry.com/neo/bilder/temp/mekaniken/MFuze1.2.and.eQ.conform/03.Avid.EDL.Manager.jpg

Select the RED16 template and the options I have checked. You want the clip name in comments since the tapename is incorrect.

4. Convert the EDL to AAF in eQ
http://www.irry.com/neo/bilder/temp/mekaniken/MFuze1.2.and.eQ.conform/04.eQ.convert.EDL.jpg

Make sure to check "ignore B-rolls". Otherwise all clips that ends on B will loose that B in the AAF. =)

5. Conform settings I
http://www.irry.com/neo/bilder/temp/mekaniken/MFuze1.2.and.eQ.conform/05.eQ.conform.settingsL.jpg

Tape name from seg name and limit to 16 chars (remember that MetaFuze added "_" after the clip name...). Edit list/Tape info/file media.

6. Conform settings II
http://www.irry.com/neo/bilder/temp/mekaniken/MFuze1.2.and.eQ.conform/06.eQ.conform.settingsL.jpg

Don't miss to limit filetypes to r3d. Time code and originator from header. The other options are pretty much up to you. =) Rush name might be good to set to seg name.

Also select the folder on your SAN/Network/Drive where all the R3Ds are located. It will recursively go through that dir so you can select the root of a drive. But narrow it down as much as you can to speed things up. And for the love of good, don't forget to limit file types to r3d. :sifone:

7. Voila, conformning!
http://www.irry.com/neo/bilder/temp/mekaniken/MFuze1.2.and.eQ.conform/07.eQ.conform.settingsL.jpg

There ya go. =)

There might be a lot of typos here. Kinda stressed up atm. Will correct them later on. =)

Ask if anything is unclear.
