We're building a second editing station for Red footage. We've come up with a basic parts list. Can you tell me if I should add or change anything?

1. Processor: 2 Quad Core Processors (total 8 cores). Which model would be the best and economic?

2. Ram: 16 GB (DDR3) What should be the speed of the RAM?

3. Nvidia Quadro 3800 or is there anything more ideal in the same range of pricing?

4. Mother Board. Which model would be able to handle 16 GB RAM, with the highest speed, and two PCI express slots, should be able to handle SLI in case we go for dual GPU.

Once the redrocket is integrated into apps by Adobe and Apple i should be fine. Hopefuly they have the SDK and get to work on it.

In the spare PCI slot i will put a decent audio card i think.

This is the complete PC system I will be assembling (mostly from NewEgg.com). It should be PLENTY powerful for a good PC video editing system (I'm using Premiere CS4.1).

  • MoBo: ASUS P6T7 = $450
  • CPU: Intel 8-Core (HT) i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz LGA 1366 = $550
  • RAM: OCZ 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) = $219 (the "Platinum" is a little faster, but I'm having hard time finding it)
  • Case: iStar D-400L (rackmount, 3x 120mm fan) = $200
  • Video card = FX4800 = $1299
  • System Disk: OCZ 120GB SSD (220MB/sec read!)
  • Power Supply: 1000w (undecided) = $169
  • Blu-ray/DVD burner: LG GGW-H20L = $159
  • Internal Data Storage: iStar BPU-350SATA hotswap RAID cage for 5x 3.5 disks in 3x5.25 space + 5x WD 1TB drives = $550
  • External Data Storage: 2x G-Speed es Pro 4GB (for 7TB of RAID-5) = $3989.98

Entire System Total = $7,585.98 (bear in mind, $4k of that is the external storage --which you could probably do without if you just wanted to use the internal storage in RAID-0 for 5TB of space)

I currently have a Dell 2407WFP monitor, but I'd like to be able to view my source in 2k (2048x1024), so I'm trying to figure out what 30" monitor to buy... having major trouble deciding.
 
Here are the latest specs I have for a machine I'm about to purchase. Would you make any changes to this list? Is 12GB enough RAM? How about the video card? Can you foresee any bottlenecks?

Jonas, for your PSU, if you want the best get the Corsair 1000W and sleep like a baby knowing you are solid and have more than enough headroom for whatever you decide to add later.

Also, people shouldn't be afraid of G. Skill for RAM. They are often the fastest out there, and have proven themselves to be more than reliable with the gaming and overclocking communities. Even their new SSDs.
 
I purchased the Kingwin power supply a while ago, and I love it. 1100 (actual) Watts with modular cables (and a better price than the Corsair).

I've got G. Skill RAM in a couple other machines, but I like the speed and timing of the OCZ platinum and gold for the DD3 1600 sticks. I've been very happy with the OCZ stuff.

And I have had several G.Skill sticks go bad... but I think you can get that to some degree no matter what brand you go.
 
Oh, I guess you already built the rig. I didn't catch that.

Did you read an exhaustive review for the Kingwin? Either way, with a 1100W PSU you are sure to be covered unless you go ape-chit. :)

G. Skill 6-7-6-18 1600Mhz

There is also these but they were pulled from the market because only some sets were stable (full refund if you got a bad set):
G. Skill 8-8-8-21 2000Mhz

All of them would overclock a little.

Don't get me wrong OCZ makes great RAM!
 
I was going with the EVGA Intel X58 classified motherboard. Jonas and Paul, is there a particular reason you chose an ASUS P6T7 and P6T6?

The biggest reason was the 7 PCIe slots, four of which can run simultaneously at x16.

It also has 2 SAS ports, which I am using for an extra two SATA ports, which means there are 8 SATA ports total on the board (I've got 5 drives in RAID plus the OS drive on the main 6 SATA ports, then I use the SAS ports for a DVD burner and a removable hard drive drawer).

The board also supports 24GB of RAM.

If you're eyeing the "5 seconds to surfing the web" via the Gateway feature, know that it takes longer to get to that Gateway interface than it takes me to boot to Windows Vista (I do have an SSD system drive... but it shouldn't make THAT big a difference).

In general what processors are preferable (xeon/I7/AMD) to build a workstation for red media 4k work flow ?

For 10 hours of 4k red media what type of raid i should have ?
(information regarding what type of raid controllers amount of the storage capacity so on )

Can i get real time play back from Red Rocket card while editing 4K red media ?

If yes what are the recommended preview monitors for color grading and client viewing ?

any technical suggestion to build a system under 15K
?
