I can't help feeling it's incredibly sad you've not found the time or inclination to read more. Don't get me wrong I love my pretty pictures, but a world without Gabriel Garcia Marquez, without Cervantes, without Asimov, Harold Pinter, Allende, Phillip K. Dick , Kafka or Hemmingway... Well it's a one I'm not entirely sure I could find lasting happiness in.

Hopefully when you finally do ease up at Red you'll have the leisure time to dedicate to such wonders.

The Hobbit is one of those books I've always wanted to read but never go around to it. Another though Jim is that the film adaptation will be better because of you and your vision and will help bring many young minds to discover the book for the first time.

Everyone knows I have several personality disorders. That isn't a secret.

What may surprise you is that I have only read one book (cover to cover) in my life. True enough.

I glean, scan, pay attention, and keep my eyes and ears open... but I don't read books. Make no mistake, I can read. My attention span is just too short to read 100+ pages. I have the attention span of a ferret on crystal meth. I don't really do drugs of any kind. Well... blood pressure meds. And cigars.

The only book I ever read front to back, cover to cover... was The Hobbit. That was in 1969 while at USC.

How ironic.

Think about this for a minute. And you just might get how unbelievable this all is to me.

What a life...

I don't about the reading bit, but this post of yours certainly shows you can write, and write well indeed! A bio beckons, I hope? For those of us who do love to read? ;)

I think the most necessary quality for greatness is the ability to listen. Whether it's with your eyes, hands, nose, heart, sub-consience or ears, listening and then the ability to hear is what makes all the difference. What a wonderful post of Jim's to clue us into his astounding ability to listen and hear. He let us know that he was willing to listen to his heart about reading in spite of lots of contrary evidence and also letting us into his process of listening to even the most subtle of sound such as his connection to the Hobbit.

Jim you are a true inspiration to me and I thank you for the lesson.

That's deep, really deep... No disrespect to anybody that commented but that really transcends an Intelectual way of looking at it, it really transcends the natural. What it says to me more so than the truth of some of the other comments made (especially Jarred's) is the power of gong after something, being proactive no matter what & when you do what possibilities it puts out there, evedently ones that can have results beyond your wildest dreams. It shows me the potential of it, because things could have played out in a way that would have left you with out being able to have this confession.. Pretty crazy....

The Hobbit was the first book I read in English cover to cover. In fact I attribute my learning English by reading The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings (and several Final Fantasy games). I've read it over 13 times by now, once in Italian so I would start learning that language too. I'm super excited, I bought 21 tickets for the midnight showing at the Sherman Oaks Arclight so I could bring all my close friends to share this with me :)

I'm dyslexic so I started off hating to read. Everything written at a level I could tackle was terrible and so I avoided it at all costs. Finally, after some humiliation, I got proficient enough at it that I could start tackling the good stuff. Books are a treasure to me, couldn't image life without them. I never looked at being dyslexic as a handicap, only an occasional annoyance as I can not spell my way out of a paper bag (thank goodness for spell check). Mostly it is an advantage as I think differently than most people. I am sure it is the same with you and adhd. By the way, do you know who else has adhd? Freakin' everybody! Varying degrees of course.

I never actually read the hobbit, I had it read to me. I was at a school for dyslexics and our dorm master read it to us from the hallway as we lay in our beds. He read with a passion and creativity that I doubt even Peter Jackson can match, it was simply riveting. As far as books goes, the Hobbit to me is way better the ring trilogies. I look forward to seeing the movie.
