  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Yesterday I asked a question, and I obviously did not phrase it well or explain completely what I needed to know. Therefore, I will rephrase and try to explain myself more clearly.

I am a cinematographer and a DP, NOT a computer expert. I am going to have a Windows computer built for me. It needs to be able to handle the data from a Red-One or a Scarlet. What I want to do, is be able to transfer the digital info from a Red 16GB CF Card to the computer hard drive. Then to reduce the quality and just basically edit scenes together. Then I must be able to transfer this rough edited version onto a DVD or external hard drive for future reference only.

I hope to be using the editing software provided by Red and Adobe Premier.

I need to tell my computer guy EXACTLY what is needed for the PC. Would someone be kind enough to give me a list of the features, hardware, and software required to do what I need to do?

It would be better to have too much than not enough. The Red-One and the Scarlet may require different things, but there must be a single set-up that could handle either.

Thanks, and I'm not looking for put-downs on how computer stupid I am. I just need the kindness of some intelligent help.

1825€ : a good price for decent performance with Premiere CS5.

These are my suggestions:

  • Definitely go for a quad core i7 processor.
  • Motherboard doesn't matter so much - as long as you have a 16x PCI-E slot, and support for triple channel RAM. I like Gigabyte ones myself - fairly inexpensive but good quality in my experience. One with an eSata port would be especially good for transferring if your reader has that (the RED Station does)
  • As Jean suggests, you'll want a graphics card based on the Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 - this is hardware accelerated in CS5, and a lot cheaper than the Nvidia Quadro cards.
  • Get six or twelve GB of DDR3, triple channel RAM.
  • Make sure you're getting the 64 bit version of Windows 7, because Premiere and After Effects will only run on it (not 32 bit anymore), and if you get more than 4GB of RAM, you need it too.
  • If you get an i7, a beefy graphics card and a few hard drives, you'll want to make sure your power supply can give at least 600 watts. Maybe a 700 or 800 watt one just to be sure.

Hope that helps!

Stephen

Thank you VERY much Jean.
That info will be very helpful. But, I'm afraid my computer guy will not understand terminology which is not English, and costs not US dollars.
Would you mind translating that for me?
Thanks for your kindness.

i don't know the prices in US but 1825€ = 2435€

The processor is an I7 2,88 Ghz quadcore 1366 socket
The motherboard has X58 chipset 8 sata ports and 1 e-sata, 6 ram slots and 2XPCI-E 16
The memory is 12 gb DDR3 triple channel,6X2 Go
The GTX 285 is validated by Adobe to use Mercury engine acceleration (playback and render) in Premiere CS5 which can output DPX and numerus video codecs
The hard drives with ICH10R motherboard controler can be configured with 1X250 Go for windows 7 64 bit and applications,3X1 To in raid 0 for storage of R3D files and 1X1 To for export .For a raid 5 configuration, better use a dedicated hardware raid controler card.
The power supply can output 650w at max, enough for this configuration.
THE OS is cheaper in OEM version

With Premiere CS5,you get Encore for Blueray, dvd,cd burning.
If you are interested by After effect,12 Go ram is the minimum.

RAM is more important than CPU clock speeds these days…

Building System

Building System

This is what I built for my workstation about 5 months ago.

I wanted stability more than anything but this setup has great performance as well.

I'll be adding another 12 Gig of memory and upgrading the video card to accomodate the Mercury Engine for Premiere.

An HP Dreamcolor display wouldn't hurt either.

A Blueray drive.

Lastly, there's no such thing as too much big and fast raid storage.

I have not been disappointed at all with my system but ultimately, a 2 socket motherboard with as many slots for ram as possible is the way to go. But it's big bucks.

Hope it goes well.

Cheers.

I would just add some modifications to this setup..

1- for the power supply get OCZ 600+ watts..

2- change the 250 GB drive with SSD.. SSD drives runs the system and applications really fast plus most of the experiences with CS4 tells that running on SSD makes the apps rarely crashes.. I would suggest you this:
OCZ COLOSSUS LT SERIES SATA II 3.5" SSD the 120GB model sells for around $430.. the 250GB model has more speed,,,

config re-written:

* CPU Intel Core i7 930 2,88 Ghz quadcore 1366 socket (maybe you can think about the Core i7 980x it six core cpu.. obviosly much more power)

* Motherboard X58 chipset 8 sata ports and 1 e-sata, 6 ram slots and 2XPCI-E 16.. go for any brand (I also prefere Gigabyte too especially the GA-X58-UD7)

* RAM 12 GB DDR3 triple channel, 6X2 GB.. chose the highest MHz available there is 2000MHz from Kingston (HyperX) also from other companies,,

* Graphics Adapter nVidia Geforce GTX 285 ,, any brand ,, I prefer PNY

* OCZ COLOSSUS LT SERIES SATA II 3.5" SSD (any size you can afford) for the system

* get three hard drives from WesternDigital.. 1TB or 2TB each.. and tell the guy to configure them in Raid 5 array.. black edition will offer more speed..

* PSU from OCZ .. 600W minimum.. the more watts you get.. the more free you are to add more hardware to the system..

SSD is certainly the way to go. Any reason why you are suggesting this particular SSD drive?

and a pci firewire 800 controler card with an external Lexar compactflash reader or an internal Addonics compact flash reader with a silicon based chipset pci-e sata controler card.
