My goal is to be able to get a computer that will let me edit the fixed Scarlet footage for the purpose of outputting 3D. The reason I'm writing about this laptop is it includes a 3D screen and graphics card which I believe could be reasonably valued at about $500 in terms of the cost of obtaining this separately with a PC configuration.

Not being very knowledgeable about computers I'm not one of those who can cobble together the workings from many sources. The threads where what parts are chosen to economically make a killer machine are laid out leaves me out in the cold as I don't think I'd be able to do that.

While I would love to get a machine that would buttress me against future needs, I really think I'm out of my element to strive for that. I would love to accomplish that, but I truly want to make sure I can make a purchase that will allow me to accomplish my 3D goals as economically as possible now. I'm not looking to work in a fast paced production environment, but to create presentations of my 3D work, so perhaps I could live with a slower output than most.

So, I wanted to present the Sony Laptop for consideration and thoughts as to its capabilities and even hopefully learn its not just a machine for the fixed Scarlet's 3D editing, but might allow me to work with Epics in the future if that occasion should arise. From what I've read so far it wouldn't allow for a high speed external esata drive, but I'm encouraged by the i7 processor and other features and so present it for your consideration.

Thanks

I think it depends for what you want to do.. I mean, are you planning to live from this work? will your delivery be theatrical release, home DVD/Bluray, TV? does it need to be a laptop?

If you would be living from this notebook, doing pro work etc, then I would recommend buying a desktop instead, with a big monitor and a big 3dTV or even a 3d projector...with 3D you always want to view your content on the biggest screen possible.... you don't want to create your 3D content on a 17" monitor.. even if the final delivery is for TV or even youtube...

And for the hardware specs, if you are willing to wait a little in Q4 intel would be releasing their new processors and would be pretty fast...if you want now you can get the i7 2600k (the k means that it's unlocked for overclock) with 16GB of memory ram and some SSD (at least for the system), and a decent graphics card...if you are more serious then get a dual intel xeon, with 32gb of ram, a redray (dual red ray if you plan to go epic 3d)...a quadro graphics card....

the Sony doesn't have an esata port but does have an USB 3.0 which can go at up to 5Gbps (sata 2 is 3Gbps and sata 3 is 6gbps)....

Thanks Fabricio. I guess my basic question was would this be enough and the answer is no. I do want theatrical distribution and you make good points re size of monitor and what's possible. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet in terms of hashing out a system in a more complicated fashion. Thanks

Additionally, I wouldn't count on a pair of fixed-lens Scarlets to be suitable for 3D acquisition, at least not without extensive post correction. At the expected Epic-S price point I think it's unlikely that the lenses between cameras will be consistent enough to provide the required alignment precision. That said, if you're willing to put in the time in post to fix any framing inconsistencies then have at it.

HOWEVER, on second thought, given the good results people are getting with GoPro 3D rigs it's possible my nitpicking is silly.

I believe Jim said they were optimizing the Fixed Lens Scarlet for 3D acquisition. That's what got me especially excited about the possibilities.
