For the past year on a project I've been using a compressor droplet that converts my "M" proxies to ProRes with a TC burn-in. It's always worked fine until this week - now I get 2 problems. Occasionally, i get a warning dialogue that says "server 'This Computer (tcp://127.0.0.1:49200)' is unavailable" - but not always. Nonetheless, I am able to continue with the transcode... Most of my clips transcode fine, generally the smaller clips.

But... the larger clips hang at some seemingly arbitrary point - they just stop transcoding. The est. time to completion jumps up to days, if I try pausing or canceling the process in batch monitor, it just says "canceling" forever... I can't quit the process in activity monitor (if I force quit, it just re-opens the process.) I can see that it's not even reading from the drive anymore - the drive's LED stops flashing - but otherwise, my system has not crashed and everything is fully functional outside of the compressor world. (I can even play back the clip's proxy files from the desktop without issue.) I end up having to restart my computer every time this happens.

I've tried different drives and controllers (eSATA, firewire, USB,) I called Applecare and without charging their pro fee, all the guy said was to repair permissions and then dry a reinstall which I did, to no avail. All my sharing prefs, installs, upgrades, etc. are as they should be - and haven't changed since a few weeks ago when this process was working just fine for me.

Anybody have any familiarity with this - what might be the issue?

I'm currently trying the last 2 things that come to mind - rendering out a ProRes from RedAlert that I'll drop on to the droplet - and I created new proxies, with which I'll do likewise. I'll know in a few hours if either of these make it through compressor without hanging.

I can't address all of it, but for the above problem, this works well for me:

You need to restart your computer after you run it.

I've had to reinstall FCS twice on two different machines to clear off the Compressor bugs. Worth it, though. It's not the most reliable app....
