Hi,

Does anybody have any experience with what cheaper lenses will work via adapter for the RED One? I am looking to add a few more lenses in for the moment, and am trying not to break the bank. Specifically, do you know if these lenses will work with the adapter.

They are carl zeiss jena flektogan in pentacon six mount with a pl mount adapter. I understand the quality may not be as good, but for a just in case scenario I would like to pick them up. Also any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your time - Paul DuVilla

Well.. it's kind of slow..
should cover 4.5k just fine, as its a medium format lens.
I have not personally tested one of these yet.
I have had experience with hastily made and installed PL conversions that did not allow infiinty focus, or proper witness mark alignment. you wont know until you actually have the lens in hand.
fine tuning depth can be done by a lens service vendor. but it is not free... if you are lucky its an hour or two of labor plus shipping.. if not.. then 14-15 hours

Kind of nice looking lenses. I like them. Pentacon six to pl adapters work fine, and you really only need one, adapter for multiple lenses. They are kind of limited in range and speed, but should work just fine.

Nick, I had avoided this one because it was f4.. I like the 80 and 120..and liked the 180 on film...
so the 50 looks nice?

There are a lot of other faster/great still lens options. I'm still waiting on my R1 but am personally planning something unconventional as well. Once I test it I'll share with files.

Nikon AIs are in the same price range as the Jena and faster and more plentiful for building a complete set.

You can also go C/Y with the Allstar mount for a similar investment and with faster lenses. I have some Yashica MLs that look great on my Canon adapters at 21mp. Contax/Zeiss should look even better. And you can go Canon, of course.

On DSLRs I tested, Nikon, Pentax Super Taks, Zuiko, Canon L, Various C/Y, Rollie, Hexanon, Sigma, Kiron looking for a cheaper solution. Once you invest in a complete set of lenses it's a fairly significant investment no matter what you choose.

Personally, like the 70/80s stuff since the coatings are more about color and the build quality is solid. Newer still stuff is plastic and older stuff tends to be slower.

A lot of folks would probably reco the Angenieux zoom option though. Similar investment a for the same coverage with nice still primes.

as far as PL mount lenes I don't know much but planning on learning.

For me it's about smooth bokeh and great color. For you it may be all about sharp. Some of the Canons and some of the Russians have really choppy bokeh which is distracting to me in video but can be really sharp. So, for example I'd never use a Jupiter or Helios.

The cheapest lens options for the Red One is to get the Red One Nikon mount and buy the new Rokinon/Samyang/Bower (same lens but just different brand) cine lenses in nikon mount. That is your best bet. Not only are they fast, but they are set up "cinevised" already unlike still lesnes. So you can pop a follow focus right on. All of them are full frame except for the 14mm and 8mm, but they all cover the MX sensor.

Agreed. Throw on a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 on there and you have a fairly complete lens set for around $2200.

Thanks for the replies. Also what kind of crop would I be looking at with the flektogan pentacon six zeiss lens?

Also for the nikon mount, I considered it for a while but wouldn't it still be expensive to get the mount, and then lenses on top of that?

Not if you want a decent image. You've got a 4k camera, do you want your images to be crisp, or blurred and or distorted with color casts? It may be more expensive, but at least you'll get decent images. If you plan on shooting at night an F4 lens is your worst enemy. Make sure you bring a ton of light... Plus they are full frame lenses so they will cover Dragon, a 5D sensor, etc...

mount is $500: http://www.red.com/store/products/red-one-nikon-mount

The "crop" is not given by the lens, but the sensor. That Flek is 50mm F4. So you will get the FOV of any 50mm at Super 35mm.

As someone else said, that's a medium format lens, so will cover Dragon and beyond...EASILY
