I was just wondering about compatability and light loss, with a Zeiss 10-100 T2 converted for super 16. How many stops of light loss, versus using a prime lens? Does this become a problem issue with the Red camera? Any suggestions would be appreciated, or knowledge of using that lens with that camera.

Are you wanting to cover S35 at 4K or just cover 2K/S16 ? The lens will cover the 2/3" 3k at T2 as a standard 16mm. I think you lose may be 1/2 stop with the S16 conversion.

You don't lose light because of the S16mm coverage on the sensor. The Zeiss zoom that is modified for S16mm has an additional optical element made by formerly Optex or Abakus among others, that is fit behind or replaces the rear element of the 10-100mm turning the T2 stop, into a T2.4. It's the additional optics that both enlarges the image and makes it a bit dimmer.
You'll need a S16mm zoom for 2K coverage on the RED one I believe, but for the future Scarlet 2/3", just the regular 10-100mm should do, and unmodified regular 16mm Zeiss zoom will be both faster and sharper I bet.

Thanks David.

I've seen some 2K examples of R1 footage that looked quite soft, I guess people were using 35mm lenses with them.

Can anyone point me to samples of R1 footage shot with S16 higher res glass?

Here is a music video shot by Kip Kubin with a Cooke 9-50mm. R1 2k is known to have some softness issues, especially at certain focal distances. Apparently this is related to the OLPF being optimized for 4k. 3k Scarlet should definitely be sharper if the lens is up to the task.

If I could chime in here for a moment fellas, Mr Gal is quite correct that the conversion optic changes the constant stop from T2 to T2.4 and the focal length range from 10-100 to 12-120mm. No further compensation required. Wide open the image can be a tad flary, but stopped down even one stop it tightens substantially. The converted lense covers super 16/2k with room to spare, and covers 16x9 in 3k from 30mm to 120mm. my company supplies this conversion, installed, for a very fair price. Check out the web site for a look-see.

Does the Zeiss optex S16 conversion cover S35 at 4K?

Hey Steve, can you tell us more about your lens? What the image like at 4k or 3k?

The 10-100 Standard 16mm will cover Scarlet 2/3" without a modification. So keep that in mind if you think you're getting a Scarlet.

I just got done shooting all summer with my RED and a Zeiss S16 11-110mm (non converted). This lens covers 2 and 3K. It looks awesome. The converted lenses glass is not the same as the Zeiss zoom that was specially made for S16. There is no second party glass added as well. You can find converted 16mm ones all day for around $5000 to $6000 and the original S16mm, which are harder to find, for around $8000 to $10,000.
