Can somebody with a RED and a DSLR do a very quick non-scientific test to compare the two? My feeling is that the RED is very similar to a DLSR in terms of dynamic range and noise but without actually seeing something it is hard to tell. Just a quick snap of a high-contrast scene would be very telling.

I'd be happy to do it myself extensively with a Nikon D200 when I get my camera (this month?) but if anyone could do something quick now that would be great.

Even better would be if we could find the DLSR that is the most "RED-like". Perfect for testing set-ups and spotting locations without needing access to a RED.

I'd be happy to shoot something for you tomorrow; I have a 5D (12MP FF) and an XTi (10MP crop) that would be good for comparisons. Just gotta wait until the sun comes up. :-)

Do you have the birger mount to shoot the RED with the same lenses?
I'd suggest that shooting a comparision without shooting the same lenses would be misleading for looking spatial quality and color but not for noise/latitude.

Oh that would be great! Just roughly the same field of view and same exposure would be fine for now. When the Birger mount comes we'll take it from there.

Hi Sander,

Didn't forget about you but it was pouring rain in San Diego today (where I'm staying this week), and there wasn't an opportunity to get any nice shots. I will try again at my earliest convenience!

Thanks for your care. We'll be waiting then, our special guiding light .

Cheers,
E. :-)

I already think it is great that you want to spend some time on it, so whenever you're ready. Actually I don't think it needs to be a nice shot either. Just something where you can compare dynamic range and possibly noise.

Hi,

I appreciate it - I just like to do things right if I'm going to do them. :weight_lift: That being said, dynamic range was a consideration and seeing that it was a dull, dreary day, there wasn't much range to shoot.

...that and I didn't want to get all of my equipment wet. Soon!

This was shot with a DSLR... oh, no it wasn't. It was shot with the 18-50 RED Zoom. :-)

Nice!

Is that Vegas?

Yes to LV. It is interesting that the RED ONE is getting such comparison testing. It is being dissected like no other camera ever made. I guess that is a good thing. We have learned a lot from the scrutiny. I just hope everyone who is putting it under the microscope also has the chance to actually go out and shoot something that makes them feel good...

It's interesting you mention how it makes you 'feel'. I've shot with Red for months now, and literally every time I take it out I feel like I did the first day I ever shot with my first DSLR...giddy, excited about the raw potential, liberated.

If you keep releasing upgrades I don't think that feeling will ever go away.

And about the scrutiny, do people scrutinize Ford Fiestas, or Porsches? :-)

Jim, I think it's awesome that you always post such great stuff. What a cool world .

I would LOVE to go out and shoot something! When is my camera coming again?

But seriously, whether one is better than the other is not what interests me most, I'm already convinced the RED is a great camera. But if my feeling is correct is and images from a RED are comparable to a DSLR then that would help me a lot thinking about how to put it to work.

You are absolutely correct. It acts just like a DSLR (a good one) that shoots 24fps.

Last one... I'll stop now. ISO 800.

Nice shots jim. You certainly know the right time of the day to take your pictures.
