A bit of a cross-post here, but I think this is fun...

I want a set of RPP's, but optical imperfections and "old" lenses are hard to really "impersonate" in post, be it because of how "punchy" they are, or how soft.

I bought a totally messed up Angie 25-100 zoom from the 40 - 50-ies. And I barely would use it, because it is so - well - unuseable in technical terms.

But then I took this series of tests with it, and I started to love it for its sort of old B&W/ early color-film look. It hardly resolves 720p, and is impossible to really focus, but still... I have come to love it.

And it's been used for several shorts and big commercials as a rental.

Would I rather use this than a MP/RPP?
For most uses: No!

But when this is the right thing, I could hardly get this from MP's...

Here's a comparison with a D-50, which was the only thing I had around that day...

I really love the Angie... for its use. and think that the graininess and softness and punch/low-sat feeling it gives, would hard to mimic with a MP image...

Thing is that the combination of REDs resolution with old glass, realli CAN be a good match - if that's what you're going for...

But definitely - for its use...

sorry which ones are D50?
color ones?

and what camera did you use?

that texture is hard to recreate in post...

1-41 is angie on RED ONE
42-51 is Sigma on Nikon D-50

It's not only textures. It's the whole "old film" feel of the optics.
They may be accomplished in post. Dunno for sure, but it is cool to have it straight on set.

Low (or extreme) contrast, soft (you see it all the time on the skin) and just old-fun all over. Makes you shoot differently. That can't be added in post, for sure... :)

They do have a wonderful, period feel to them with this lens. It makes the shots look very much as if they are from the past, great feeling.

But pretty soft...

The lens IS soft, but so are a lot of old films.
My cam is called "Charlie"... :)

But I think this is another quality if the RED ONE, that you can slap on vintage glass and get a vintage look. And as I said, different optics change - at least my - shooting style. And as long as it is out of choice... that's only a good thing.

I still want a set of RPPs, though...

For those "other" gigs :)
