  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Commercials before the movie...

We've had those commercials over here for years. I don't mind. It's a nice chance to go get some soda or take a piss before the show. I'm used to getting there 15 minutes after posted showtime. I may have to put up with a few commercials, but in return I pay much less than any of you to go to the movies. Around 20 bucks a month for unlimited viewings including 3D, IMAX, VIP recliner seating, etc... I haven't missed a single released film for months :)

OTOH, if you must endure the commercials for no economic benefit in return, f..k 'em :)

Pretty pathetic if that's what it comes down to. :(

Sort of reminds me of when Dell tried to charge customers extra not to have all that spyware crap pre-loaded on their PCs...

Yeah, that was hilarious! :iagree: Bloat-ware gone wild.

You can only milk a cow so much. I never watch television because of the commercials. Okay, I'll watch during the Superbowl since it's a bit of a mini film competition - with the last truly great one in 1984 - but that's it. No theaters and no standard TV. I'm down to DVDs and watching Vimeo.

If the industry isn't careful, I bet they see a spike in piracy just to get past all the ads. A few are ok, and I support it just to keep theaters alive -and some commercials are actually clever and fun to watch - but 15 minutes? They can go to hell.

It's why so many abandoned regular programming. Guess history needs to repeat itself yet again.

You subscribe to Satellite or cable with 125+ channels only to find a third of them are 24 hour infomercial/shopping channels and half the airtime on most of the rest is also commercials.

Hey, you guys could actually help me with cultural knowledge for my English Exam. How exactly is the ad sequence before a movie in the US?

In Germany it starts some ads that you can see as well on TV, but are mostly longer in the cinema (like a longer edit). Mixed with that are trailers for the new movies. Then there is a part with local ads. This is really horrible because these ads had next to no budget. Bad motion graphics, crappy photographs, sometimes even old slides that have lost most of their colour. Then (in some cinemas) there is the famous ice cream commercial after which an ice cream girl with a vendor tray asks if anyone wants some ice cream (she did that even when I was alone in the whole theatre; I answered "no, we don't, thank you!" ;) ). After the ice cream break there are again trailers (now from the same distributor) and then finally the movie. All in all it's about 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the daytime and the movie.

Not sure about the US, but in Mexico there are 3 or 4 'etiquette' blurbs - no cell phone, keep your seat clean for the next movie-goer, no smoking or talking, change your baby in the restroom, etc. Then a cell phone commercial, then a bank commercial, then finally a trailer - then another and another.

Meanwhile half the audience is on their cell phones. Once the film starts, maybe 2/3 will actually turn the phones off. Maybe.

Finally the film begins.

That was 5 years ago and I haven't been back since. Another problem was timing. I assumed we were in for two hours of entertainment, but when all was done and over it was more like two and a half. If one has a babysitter waiting, this is an issue.

I have yet to see a political campaign ad, but I'm sure they are not too far off in the distance.
