  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Commercial Shot on Scarlet-W

Thanks Kal!

It was not an easy project (non actors, we had to keep the shoot at the theater a secret from the mother, and the director did not want a bunch of lights) also the production company I was working for uses premiere and the editor had to work with the prores (R3D from S-W still not fixed), I was pushing for more color work in resolve but there wasn't time or money as mothers day is coming up, but everyone seemed very happy. I was thrilled with the way the S-W performed, and I was really stoked with the work they did keying in images into the pick ups we got of the Movie Screen. Also thanks to Matthew Nardone, Shannon Madden, Al Wo, And Travis Cannan. Amazing crew!

I would have thought .r3d is the same no matter the camera. That is a strange issue in this day and age. How was it working with prores in premiere in windows?

Matthew,
I saw this elsewhere and really thought it came out well. Shooting something that is production quality, but is also kinda ENG at the same time is certainly tough. Can you tell us where the Scarlet-W was primarily used vs. the Weapon? I thought I saw elsewhere that an Epic Dragon was used as well. Great work.

the Epic was used for the shots with the flare in the theatre. and of the girls in the bedroom and a few other shots around the house. the S-W was the interviews, and the MG was the Jib Shots

Thanks for the info. Sort of like shooting reality tv with RED cameras....not easy....again, great job.

I thought so too before i got the S-W. Seems they are working on a fix for the R3D files, but the prores look incredible and worked great in premiere (Mac) the next step would have been dragging the project to resovle which i hear can work the S-W R3D.

was a lot of set up for a very very small window to shoot in. we had only an hour or so of shoot time in the theater. when the mom got there we fired 3 cameras all at once and tried to capture her genuine reaction to a 10 min video of interviews of her friends and family, then we had about 30 min to grab pick ups.

Nice work Matthew. You guys managed to pull off a very tricky task of something that has to be planned extremely carefully and creatively and yet be 100% genuine in order to have even a small hope of working/feeling real. And you pulled it off well. Don't mind sentimental commercials when they're executed like this, and above all...looks GREAT. Nice work.

Hi Mathew, great piece, genuine, besides it looks great, well done. I have some low light night shooting coming up & am real interested to know about the shot were the mom is walking down the sidewalk at night with the umbrella guy. Firstly that was brilliant, what time was that shot, which camera was that shot on?, what ISO did you use for that, any oplf filters? did you do any noise reduction on that clip. Really need your thoughts :)

Hi Mathew, Nice one, are you able to share the ISOs as she walks to the theatre outside, the ISO as she walks down the ale inside the theatre ?

2000 ISO outside with Standard OLPF on S-W

2500 ISO as she walks down row in theatre with Epic Dragon LLOLPF

I think the setting on the MG (on the JIB) was at 2500 ISO + maybe we pushed it to 3000 i cant remember but i do know the weapon looks much much cleaner at higher ISO

no noise reduction, (i did not do the post work) was shot at about 9 pm in Buffalo NY

Nice work Matthew! I am curious on why you used 3 different cameras. What was the reasoning behind it? I assume that the MG does everything the S-W does and more. And why the Epic if you already had those?

the reason for the 3 cameras was mainly due to the fact that we needed to capture as much of the experience of the mother as it happened, she wasn't an actress. Also I had JUST got my SW wanted to get it in on a little of the shoot, so we used it for some of the interviews and other shots as the epic was rigged to a dolly, and the MG was rigged to a crane. When we needed a 3rd camera I reached out to my Pal Matt Nardone who came in with the Weapon =)

So you found the Weapon MG performs much better than the Scarlet-W in low light?
