  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Commercial Epic-W and Kowa Anamorphic

Grade in version 1, Footage and story in Version 2.
Thanks Rand!
What makes you think that grade version 1 is better?
Because they both are IPP2 in camera. No grading, just some tweaking in Red Raw from Premiere 2017.

I love this combination. Shot a short film a few months back. You really made them shine!

Thai,

Looking at them again, I can't really see a difference now. I think it was mostly due to some of the different scenes between the two versions that gave me that initial impression.

I like the key light on here skin tone in the bedroom. What are you using?
Arri M18 ¼ CTS through scrim frost diffuser to re-create the warm morning sunlight through the window.

All good then, Rand. Thanks!

I like the match cut / falling into bed in version 2
BTW what aspect / relevant settings dir you use on Helium for Anamorphic? resolution, aspect, etc.
And what specifically drove you to anamorphic versus spherical - the need for flares in the forest? (or maybe ask a different way - what part of the final result is distinctly anamorphic and could not be done with spherical?)
Last is just an artistic question thanks

Number 2 for me. I have a question. Did you fly the Epic W. If so, what drone did you fly it with?
Outstanding work!

Thanks Mike.
When it comes to anamorphic shooting it is mostly an artistic decision. Many relates anamorphic to the horizontal flares. But not only that, the stretched bokeh and DOF fall off characteristics are very distinctive to spherical (not something you can re-create with spherical). In very simple words, e.g. a 2x Anamorphic 40mm Kowa gives you the horizontal FOV of a 20mm lens with a DOF characteristics of a 40mm lens, in spherical.

When the agency approached me with their initial concept, I knew that we would shoot a lot of scenes in the forest. So my decision was clear anamorphic from the beginning. Shooting anamorphic in a forest with tall straight trees emphasizes the forest and gives you that nice compression and separation of the model.

Shot in 6K 6:5 2x Ana at 50fps, ISO 320. 4K Mastering.

Yup. I only fly RED or Mini :-)
Self-build X8 Cinecopter.
Thanks for watching Shawn.
