  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Colourlab Ai - The first officially released video graded entirely using A

Thanks Mike for your evaluation of the Software, I'ts good to hear from someone who is actually using it.

That it's non-destructive first step in color grading makes this thing powerful. I think that there are a lot of good software and hardware solutions out there, but the non-destructive options are the ones who will dominate the innovation.

SteadXP is a good example. I've been in touch with them since their kickstarter campaign about opening up the application as a plug-in with AE and Resolve while focusing more towards filmmakers than GoPro users. They haven't really shifted that focus and now their product are starting to become outdated. The GoPro crowd won't use it because GoPro already has a stabilizer in it and filmmakers are forced to do destructive changes to their footage for it to work. The process is also slow and complicated. The result is awesome, but the consistency and workflow is not viable for most cases. If they had gone down the route of opening the software, making it a plug-in, focused on easier timecode sync and workflow that is non-destructive in post (meaning changes are able to be done throughout the color grading process), that would have made their gear a dominating factor and a must-have for any production.

So it's good to see that Colourlab Ai focuses on this open workflow type and integration with Resolve.

Christopher,

Also Mark in the "post Perspective" interview said that Colourlab would potentially be availabe for integration with other applications. I believe he mentioned Avid, Final Cut, Premiere Pro as well as the higher-end products such as Colorfront, Baselight, and Assimilate Scratch and maybe others. He said whomever wanted to work with them.

First of all, no disrespect to Assimilate team, Scratch is not in the same "higher-end" color finishing market as Baselight.
Also, Baselight already utilities some automatic color matching technology, for quite a few years I might add. It is used for matching left and right images for 3D work. Presently, matching images using 3D operator in Baselight is a bit of a workaround, but when used it can be quite good. Said that, even though FilmLight already developed the necessary matching algorithms, to my knowledge, presently not many professional colorists clamoring for it. May be dailies is more appropriate market for it?

Jake,

Maybe Colourlab Ai can target or compliment specific functionality in the different programs as those companies fill may be appropriate for their existing Color Matching operations. Or, maybe they will simply decline any proposed intergration from Colourlab.

Dalies work would definitely benefit from Colourlab Ai.

Until a free demo software becomes available for end users to test, it is is difficult to justify such a blanket statement...

Why wouldn't Dalies benefit from the feature set offered by Colourlab Ai?

Because I prefer to draw my own conclusions to the software usefulness based on the actual testing and not on the hype.
So far, there are just a couple of testimonials from colorists that had worked with the software provided by the company, but I have yet to see any meaningful public feedback from the 500 "track driver" users, that shelled out $99.
So far i see only ONE on LGG:

That is why I would like to see a free demo of the software...

So you saying you don't believe anything you've seen? I don't know how useful it will "actuallly" be, but I would image it would have "some" benefit other than not using it at all.

I just don't buy all this hype until I have a chance to take this new "revolutionary" concept for a spin. What I saw in the presentation wasn't enough to convince me. Sorry, as a colorist I can't form an informed opinion on a quality of the grade based on some streamed compressed 8 bit images on a computer screen. Dado stated himself after the fact, that the presentation wasn't quite valid due to a mistake he made during the presentation. Sorry, there are just too many outstanding questions. I may change my opinion once I have a chance to try it in person and for that I will patiently wait for the demo license. I'm not planning to spend $999 per year for a software that may even bring "some" benefits...

Alright then, I understand what you are trying say. Jake I think you would be an excellent candidate to give them your unvarnished opinion. You should probably reach out to them to potentially be one of those "Factory Drivers" they talk about.

There are already 500 "factory drivers" that paid $99. As I said, I have no plans to spend any money before I am convinced about the efficacy of the tools. Until then I'll continue using my own time-tested tools:)
