  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The REDCODE RAW codec is lossy, but it's a very high quality 12bit wavelet based RAW codec that produces superb images while retaining the benefits of RAW. On the RED One, the data rates range from 28MB to 42MB per second (that's megabytes, not megabits). Each frame is stored independently, so no long gop nastiness. Because of the design of the codec you don't get macroblock artifacts, and you don't get banding issues either.

The REDCODE codec is not something that needs to be worried about, but something to be embraced and enjoyed for it allows us to record high quality 4k RAW imagery onto an affordable compact flash card or hard drive.

It is also something that should and must be examined closely by those who understand the intricacies and ultimate adverse affects of image data compression, and evaluated based on those findings. How else is anyone other than yourself and some of your colleagues to know what flavor to use in a particular set of shooting and/or posting circumstances? Especially when Red keeps adding more flavors to the mix?

My own feeling about compression and about life is that one should never blindly accept what one is told as fact. This goes for everything from politics, to religion, to digital cinema cameras. That said, I do think all flavors of Redcode so far have been very effective and very well done. I'm just not ready to stop paying attention to the reality of the details.
