color space and gamma when color correcting

hi , im doing some tests these days with color finesse in after effects just to create some pre-looks and

a) with the red footage, before i work with it in color finesse, its raw settings, the color space and gamma, do u have any advice of in which configuration is good to start with?
redspace and redspace (color space and gamma)
redspace and redlog
709 and 709
or?

b) once im in after effects, i color correct a clip in color finesse, and later i export the clip as a quicktime H264 mov file, and i notice that when i play that quicktime mov h264 file in the quicktime player outside of after effects, the contrast looks less, more washed out than it looked in after effects, in after effects all looked more contrasty and intense, and then the exported file looks weaker, is this a problem of my settings in after effects? of the quicktime player? of the color management settings? (which i leave turned off), of the initial color space and gamma i picked in the raw settings?

the "washed out" effekt is a known issue on PC ... Quicktime Player.
Try h264 with the .mp4 container, instead of using .mov.
Or... play the mov file with the VLC Player. (better?)

As Stefan says, this is a documented problem with Quicktime(as far as I know).

Quicktime defaults the gamma to 2.2 (I think!) which is incorrect for RGB codecs (should be 1.8), thus creating the 'washed out' look.

There is a setting in 'Match Legacy After Effects QuickTime Gamma Adjustments' in Project Settings within After Effects that will disable Quicktime from tagging the file with the metadata tags causing this issue.

Let me know if this fixes your problem.

The gamma should be 2.2....as with almost all video gammas
quicktime being an apple product sometimes runs in a 1.8 (printing) gamma depending on the codec

I'm currently grading 4K in AE CS4 with my footage interpreted as:
REDspace for color space
rec709 for gamma

This works for the current project.
