COLOR rendering RED handles wrong

Hi everyone,

I use to render the graded shots with some handles so i can adjust the edit points after the color timing, if needed.

It worked fine with the footafe we usually work with (Digi-B PAL, P2, HDCam, Varicam, DPX embebed in QT...).
But when I render RED ONE footage all the handles are added at the end of the clip: If i set 10 frames of handles it renders 20 more frames at the end of the clip, not 10 frames before and 10 more after.

I use ColorFixer, render from the Redcode QT referencing the original R3D file, and this seems to be the only issue and exception to an overall fine process.

Is this a regular behaviour? I am really concerned with it, since it affects our workflow and flexibility.

Thanks for any suggestion and help!

Does it happen with the official workflow as well (as described in the whitepaper)? If not, there might be a bug overlooked by Colorfixer.

It happens any way the clip is brought int

Hey Todd and Nomad, thanks for replying.

I use clip finder to reconform the projects and Colorfixer to fix them, but i already tried importing the _H files straight and it does the same.
On a 3.2 Ghz octo early2008, Ati 3870 floating point, 10.5.6 (i should have never upgraded i guess), latest Qtime, Red software and FCS updates...
This happens allways.
Also on our second editing room, a 2,8Ghz octo with a GF8800.

Are Todd and I the only guys usung handles or they work ok for you?

Currently I avoid using handles, as they don't work for me either. Lock the cut, then grade. Frustrating but workable.

We ran across this same issue a while back.

Did anyone find a solution to this? I have just encountered it.

(1) Editing in FCP, collapse everything onto one video track, take out dissolves and send to Color with files linked to original R3Ds.

(2) In Color, grade the shots... then render out, first typing in a handle length so that dissolves can be put back in FCP.

(3) The rendered files out of Color don't have the handles you've specified.
For instance, choose 3 second handles in Color, you get something like nothing at the head and 6 seconds at the tail of the rendered shot. Yes, my originals have enough handle space.

Is this a bug in Color using RED files? I've noticed a lot of people on the net have encountered this problem but no-one has come up with an answer over several months, other than suggesting completely different workflows.

Will someone stumble upon this thread in 2015 with still no answer?

And just in case you want to know my exact workflow, which to me was pretty simple...

Put my original R3Ds in RedRushes and pumped out 1k Pro Res files.

Renamed the Pro-Res files with a _H extension at the end of them.

Edited in FCP. Everything went swimmingly fast. Removed the dissolves and collapsed everything onto one video track.

Reconnected the ProRes files to the original proxies and sent the sequence to Color. Color opened it up fine. Graded the original R3Ds in Color.

Chose a handle length to render out. Handles completely screwed.
I think I need to put that image in again, just for good luck...

Color seems to have a problem with RED files only when it comes to handles. They work fine with other codecs. Let's hope for the next version…
