How are you creating the image - how are you decoding the R3D file?

Graeme

Which application did you use to generate the quicktime movie? Try spitting out a 16bit tiff from RedAlert and seeing how that looks.

Graeme

I've noticed that uncompressed and prores QT can have color banding, where TIFF and DPX are clean.

I have a feeling it has more to do with QT than RED but would like to know more.

Yup, could be how the QT is being displayed, and, presumably the decimation to 8bit for display.

Graeme

Hey Graeme, if the display is 8-bit, why don't we see banding/Posterization in the TIFFs, only the QTs?

Jim

Wish I knew. You never quite know what Quicktime does on the route from RAW data to screen. You can only control it so far, and we do, and we ensure all the stuff we can do is right....

Graeme

Cool, thanks for that. With that in mind, are you saying that the banding is just a display issue and not necessarily in the actual QT file? In other words, I would prefer to use QT to move things around but worried that I was creating an inferior file as a result.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Jim

Well, I don't know because the only way to view a Quicktime is to view it... And most monitors are still 8bit. It's not an easy question to answer.

Graeme

Please consider effects of software calibrated monitors as well – they use LUTs in the computer's graphics card to compensate aberrations in the monitor, which can cause banding as well (if you don't switch it off, QT player is Color Sync aware).
To be sure, use a monitor calibrated in it's internal hardware.
