  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Color/Final Touch - lots of heavy bugs and issues.

I'm doing the color correction on an ultra low budget feature using uncompressed 10bit and mastering on HDCAM for festival screenings. I have limited experience with Color and I'm trying to decide whether to just use FCP to do the work instead. Our plan is to go back to the 4K RAW footage and do a DI and film-out if we get distribution but obviously I want it to look the best it can so we can get that distribution deal. So, would it be better for me to avoid Color all together and just use FCP or no?

no, color has way more features, is a lot more stable than at release, and supports redcode i believe.

They showed it with R3D files or with the QT reference files?

I don't think Color has anything close to any RAW support, so there'd be quite a few bridges to cross before it had RED RAW support, I'd think.

Roundtrip through Color requires transcoding first (by hand, or Crimson).

Color does not work natively with QT Reference movies nor any R3D footage.

At NAB they may have shown FCP editing real time QT references...

hi there - I wasn't at NAB but I do believe Apple were showing Color working with R3D files - now if that was via proxie reference I don't know but I'd doubt it. I'd imagine the eventual plan is for Color to read the R3D files directly - all be it not in realtime! One step at a time..but for now it would indeed be a case of roundtripping from FCP via crimson and redcine, back into FCP then into Color at your chosen codec/resolution then back to FCP...phew that was a mouthful!

Has anyone here used the Color Finesse plug-in for Premier, with Raw support coming tomorrow it might be a powerful alternative.

I haven't used it inside Premier, but I used if for a couple of years within Avid (using elastic gasket). It is a wonderful plug-in if you can get the full bit depth out of it, which you should with Premier. The problem with using it within Avid is that it was only able to pass 8-bit info once you came back into the Avid application. But as a plug-in, it is a very powerful grading tool. No it's not a DaVinci, Nucoda or Lustre system, but if you need a good grading tool within AfterEffects or Premier, then this is well worth the money. The nice thing about Color Finesse is that you have quite a few ways to achieve the same thing, depending on how you like to work. Histogram sliders, Curves, HSL, etc. If you're used to a certain way of adjusting an image, chances are you can do that way in Color Finesse. Check out the demo.

After reading the forum, this now seems like an old problem:

I'm starting in FCP, sending to Color for grading, and after sending back to FCP, everything is far too dark.

The question I'm scared to ask is... has anyone found a solution to this? Hopefully I inadvertently skimmed across something simple and important somewhere along the way?

It works differently if you're exporting as QT or DPX. Which one are you using?

I purchased the color Finesse for FCP, it works nice, it even works with CineForm. But as plug-in in FCP won't work as native for R3D. Pretty sure Synthetic Aperture already know how to bring in R3D natively in stand alone application, so it would be great if they upgrade the plug-in, then Color Finesse debayers R3D within the plug-in, then send to FCP.

As it is now, I'm not using it as often as I use Color, although Color has really serious problems at this point.
