  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Color correction in Premiere - what do I want?

I personally don't think Adobe needs to rebuild the wheel. Most color grading apps ie Scratch, Resolve, Baselight, Pablo etc can accept XML now however sending out an XML is not possible in Premiere. Personally I'd prefer to use one of these other apps as they are strictly focused on doing color grading well. Maybe asking for XML out of Premiere is the more reasonable request at least for the short term.

Jay, are you attempting to be a colorist? If you don't really know what to ask for then I would have to assume you wouldn't know what to do with the tools if you did have them. You need look no further than what any of the other apps offer if your looking for suggestions. If you are on a PC why don't you test drive Scratch and get familiar with what it does extremely well and then I think you'll realize there really is no "good enough" solution. Respectfully speaking.

XXML out of premiere is implemented, just go to export fcp xml. Its much cleaner in CS5.5 than it was in CS5. Xml, EDL OMF, AAF import is very functional and present in Premiere and AE.

I have not used it, but does File > Export > Final Cut Pro XML accomplish this task? Can that "Final Cut Pro XML" be pulled into Resolve, or does it have to be opened in FCP first?

NO the current version of Resolve is more compatible with premiere than fcp as it uses EDL. But version 8.0 of resolve will be FCP friendly.

Wow.. Good responses, I love you guys.

ok then let me lean in the direction that you all are gently nudgeing me (Except Bruce, who dispite his best attempt is pushing me with a steam roller! :)

Let say I go MAC based, but use Premiere, and it's XML features to roundtrip toresolve and back to Premiere. Here are my questions;

Can I run Premiere on the Windows side, make the XML and then reboot and run Resolve on the MAC side? I ask cause some have said Premiere is not fantastic or fully 64bit on the MAC side.

I would prefer Resolve for sure. But I want to stay with Premiere.. So who is using Resolve with Premiere?

Someone on here commented I did know know color correction cause I do not know what to ask for: This is incorrect. in fact I know quite a bit when it comes to creating my looks, and my clients like my work. I just take the "long way" to get there. I have an "eye". What I don't have is a streamlined way of creating what I want. So that's what i am working on.

here's another question: Is it possible to work on a project in Premiere on a windows system, saving to a network drive, and then pulling up the XML of this project on a MAC system in resolve for finishing.
This would be my perfect solution.

Jay

should work totally fine. you can build a hackintosh or dual boot a mac pro and you'll be set!

everything would need to be on shared drives of course.

Ok so if a Hackintosh, or a dual boot system will work, then can I assume a network situation would work also? Just keep my premiere system, and add a MAC wiith resolve. Use XML to pull the project from Premiere on the shared network drive, and then output?

This sounds to easy man.. What's the catch?

Jay

yep yep. only catch i can think of is you have to switch machines/os to go back and forth i.e. can't work on both at the same time. though you could have two machines at the same workstation, and a switchboard for the monitors or something, or a bunch of monitors, whatever works best. just do some research into a dual boot system if you're going to do a hackintosh (i recommend it).

Just one thing if you decide to go 'hackintosh', just see if your system is supported. There are a few hardwares that don't have drivers for OSX, and then you wont get a fully functional os.
For some the audio doesn't work, other the WiFi or graphics card. There are a few forums out there with people willing to help others installing successfully the 'hackintosh'.
Last time I checked the GeForce 5xx series card didn't have support (a few were saying that it will came with Lion)...don't know if this is still true but I would just check if someone with a system similar to mine installed successfully...

I'm not going hackintosh. My plan is a network.. Windows system handles premiere for cutting, and then XML it over to a MAC resolve system via Shared drive for color and finishing.

But I'd like to hear from more people who have done this.. BRUCE!!! You out there? Has then been done successfully? I'm surprised I have not heard from more people who do this.

Jay

Simply save your project on an external drive and open on any platform win7 or osx 64 bit. PProcs5 to cs5.5 is fully 100% 64 bit on both OS's mac or PC. I have resolve and use it with the EDL. But I honestly hardly use it. I, like most people get tired of moving footage around PPro to AE to Audition to Resolve to...... tiring. I just edit in premiere then xml to Smoke---End of story. Rumors have it that Smoke might be getting some lustre features and easing up on the Editing interface making it more user friendly. Now back to Ppro CS5.5. You wont get a faster NLE

Just get Mac. Most people I know run Premiere on Mac Pro towers 2008 and newer, min 16GB ram with absolutely no speed complaints, and I live in LA, so thats a hell of a lot people. Obiviously a well configured PC itself is faster than a Mac, but most of the pro Applications are Mac only...

Jay! Haven't tried XML from Premiere to Resolve then back. Since I have the Resolve 8 beta, I can give it a go? I was up till like 5AM doing TV spot stuff for some summer movies though (After Effects renders bogged me down) so am gonna pass out tonight. Also we only have Premiere 5 not 5.5. We don't use Premiere much for editing, more just assembling stuff and as a helper for After Effects.

My 2c is once you start getting into fast shared storage, costs start increasing quickly. Instead I suggest you just spend the cash on a nice fast Mac and run everything on that. Or do PC edit + Mac finish station, but copy the footage onto a drive?

We have Resolve, Avid, Premiere and After Effects on the same fast Mac for broadcast finishing jobs. Flanders Scientific monitor plus MC Color controls for Resolve, MC Transport for Avid. Well, of course we have like another 20 or so Avids on a Unity, plus Symphony systems etc. But for simple finishing stuff, we just take the project over to this system and it works really well.

Attached to that Mac we have a RedRocket, a flashed nVidia gtx 285, nvidia gt 120 and a Blackmagic card for output. Our high-speed RAID is believe it or not just an internal soft raid of 4 drives! Of course we never put anything essential on it that isn't backed up elsewhere - this is just a scratch thing to hold files. Recently for the last couple Alexa jobs we did... we just plugged in a Firewire drive and Resolve ran with it right from there.

My 2c is: in a month or two, get a new Mac Pro when they have Thunderbolt. Redrocket, nVidia cards, plus that little Promise Raid thing. Hacked GTX 285 plus GT120 is a decent combo if you can find it but otherwise, Quadro 4000 or wait to see what the new gfx card options are for the new Mac Pros?

Okay, I'm about to pass out now and still have to drive home so will duck out for now... sorry Jay! Will write more in a few hours when I can.

But seriously, you have to try the Resolve tracker. My friend was tracking a motorcycle driving down the street shot from a moving car's POV for the titles for NY Ink - the main guy was on it so we wanted to highlight him of course. We just drew a mask it and the tracker followed the thing as it drove all around the place, changed perspective, even drove mostly out of the frame then came back. Tons of fun.

jay, I'm not questioning your eye, in fact I never said that. I was simply stating that you may not know the tools that a colorist has at there disposal which is why you wouldn't know what to ask for in a color grading solution for Premiere. I don't know you personally and therefore am not questioning your aesthetic, creativity or your ability to create stunning imagery. Please don't take it the wrong way. Just didn't sound like you are a colorist and therefore may just not understand the tools.
I run Premiere on a dual 2.66 Nahelem Qaud core MacPro with a GTX 285 and send projects to Resolve all the time via EDL flawlessly and performance is stellar in both.

Mike,

No worries dude. I would have to say you are right. I am not a pro colorist in terms of knowing the tools. However it would seem you have all given me my new workflow.
My plan is to get a Mac system, and, as Bruce said, start off by copyng the files from one system to another, but later on use shared storage. This plan will allow me to avoid messing up our current editing systems, and not having to buy a bunch of MAC software. I don't know why I got the impression that Premiere could not sent EDL or XML files to Resolve... But I did. Yikes.

Thank you for all of your help.

Jay

...a flashed nVidia gtx 285

Did you flash the card yourself or buy it pre-flashed? Did it require a larger ROM chip to be soldered on? It works OK with Mac Pros or are you using it on a Hackintosh?

If your on a tight budget, Davinci Resolve Lite is shipping in June for free! Sure there will be some limitations from the regular version but it still will be a valuable tool.

Wow, free version of resolve? That's amazing, thanks for the tip! We could really use those lite versions on our edit workstations at our film school. We like free.
