  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Collister Dragon Test for ASC

Every time I look at the shot with the tree, I giggle with excitement. :-)

Funny its true.

Thats what caught my eye since Ive had issues in the past with foliage.

But the skin tones is just plain amazing :)

Lovely images. Thank you for yur effort. Love the man by the window and the sun/tree shot

Thanks Peter. The older gentlemen reminds me of my 95 year old father. I see a lifetime of detail in his expression.

You mentioned that you screened this footage on 84" sony 4k, have you had a chance to view this or any dragon footage on larger screen?

Thanks again for sharing.

The edited shots were conformed in 4K and then transferred to Red Ray to show on Red's Sony 4K monitor. I would love to see it projected in 4K. I will discuss with Jarred..

This is the most convincing test yet for me int erms of skin tones. Peter, please tell me there wasn't an LC filter on those first few opening shots?

If not, this is the skin tone and roll off I've been waiting for. I'd challenge any Alexa fanboy to differentiate those shots with an Alexa's.

edit: also, please tell me you weren't using bounces on those opening backlit shots either? This I don't mind as much, but just unreal if this is a purely "point and shoot" series of shots.

I love the shot of the child, her hair is so fine it is great to have a bit of wind blowing ... Sounds easy but things like fine moving translucent hair is what impresses me and is hard to do digitally. Second huge shot is the older gentlemen, he has so much depth and layering in his skin with so many colors ... That shot creates an emotional connection for me.

I was looking at this footage with a commercial DP friend of mine last night...he's very familiar with Alexa and Epic, and he actually started to muse that already this is looking BETTER than Alexa. There is a range and clarity to the image that is shocking. The expanded DR and extra resolution seem to be playing together in complete harmony.

I think that's what got me too. There is an emotional texture to this footage that has bowled me over. I never thought a digital image could affect me as much, but it did.

Lovely. I, for the life of me, can't understand those "not organic, harsh video" comments on vimeo. This looks as close to filmic "feel" as I've ever seen, played it on three different displays.

Peter,

Was there a reflective surface or any source filling in the trunk of that tree?

Did you just expose for the trunk and recover highlights? Did you have much to recover or did it hold it all?

thanks

Peter I was able to attend a screening at RSH involving Redray which was projected in stage 4.

Jarred I know you are busy but..............if you could.......please allow us a view into the future by screening Peters dragon footage.(bonus would be Marks and Toms also)

Thats all I want for Christmas!

Wow!

Wow!

This test is incredible. So beautiful. thank you Peter! Did you use lighting for any of the shots?

I am noticing 3 obvious facts (to my eyes) with this test:

1 Dragon, most amazing skin tones I have ever seen / film or digital
2 HUGE resolution and super high frames per second
3 The price of a fully loaded Dragon will be MUCH lower than Alexa and F65, none of which come even close in DR and skin tones.

So now, I can only ask one thing: Why would any body in their right mind EVER buy or use anything else if having the choice of riding the Dragon?
If somebody has a reasonable answer, please educate me. I am feeling very stupid other wise!

Scott, There may have been bounce coming from the house across the street (60 feet away) I exposed so that the trunk was one stop under by incident meter. I wanted to hold the bark with direct sun on it but didn't want to hold sky detail since there wasn't any and I wanted to see what the sun would do

If this is a stupid question forgive me, but, is this an ungraded footage?, is this prores straight out from the camera? if it is, Red nailed it big time, those are the most beautiful skin tones I've ever seen, no doubt..

Pablo,

The Epic Dragon in its native form does not produce Pro Res files. The Meizler Module will be able to do this.

So my footage was transcoded from r3ds in the beta Red Cine X with a minor grade and edited by my friend Jeroen. No post sharpening was applied. It was a 4K post and then output to Red Ray for our demo.

I hope this is clear

Hi Peter,

Also, the upcoming proxy Module would be able to record ProRes.

Otherwise, Art Adams is "cautiously optimistic" after watching your quick test :-)
