Anyone want to try an experiment?

Come up with a story idea, kick it around amongst those interested until there's a shootable (good) script. I'm thinking a five minute short.

Script is shot by whoever wants to shoot it (Same script for everyone). Maybe some can pass on the footage to others to edit, color correct, etc.

Shorts are posted and notes given. Then they're posted for the world to watch.

I'm not quite sure what I'm after here but I feel that with this community and today's technology - collaboration on a short project could prove beneficial, or at least fun.

Thoughts?

I've tried that before. Usually doesn't get past the script when that part's "collaborative".

My suggestion is to have the script written independently. Make that a "competition" if you like, vote on the script, and the one that wins the vote is the one everyone shoots.

Too much input into a script and it'll never get done.

If you decide to go forward with it, I might be down to play depending on my schedule.

So, DorkmanScott, you're suggesting everyone submit scripts, they're voted on and then narrowed to one? I'm down for that, but not looking forward to tons of scripts. I see your points though and agree.

Another option is everyone suggests/votes on a theme/topic/basic plot/genre etc. and then go from there.

Or perimeters to be met? (Like with most 48 hour projects)

Shawn, I suggest something better.

I did this back in my DVXuser days..

Someone make a short that has no 3rd act.. Another user picks up where they left of and continues.. and so on and so forth

Shawn, what kind of story/ genre are you looking for? I'd be willing to write something and can email you a sample spec. I also have access to some credited actors.

Best, Mike

because we have access to the same set of tool, we could shoot a story thats happening all around the world. my suggestion would be a story based around a pet, like a dog, somehow gone missing from it's home in NY and 'somehow' ends up in UK, then Australia, then berlin and so on. for continuity purpose we can 'ship' the pet to the shooting country.

it would be a great phenomena , and news worthy project. if we named the pet as, say, ROCKY , it would be known as 'The ROCKY Phenomena'. each and every country can 'excerpt' their traditional values and living styles, and how they treat a lost animal (or something like that). It would be a great stepping stone for young directors too (who own RED). you can say that "i did the Berlin or Hong Kong's part of the 'Rocky Phenomena'.

that said, lets 'invent' a new kind of filmmaking. international collaborative filmmaking. One Camera, One Story in One Planet.

If I were to pick something, it would be more thriller/suspense. I've been working on a short about a man trapped in his house by his own paranoia... so we think.

Mostly, I'm stuck with a broken hand right now. I just want to do something. Plus, if we can all work on this together somehow, should be really fun.

I don't want to ship an animal around the world.

If anything, someone should go to a shelter, adopt a dog/cat, post its pic and then those who want to participate can go and adopt a look-a-like.

Easiest thing would be a 5- or 10-minute non-narrative short, like Baraka. All visual. We've got people all over the world. All you need to do is pick a piece of music and a theme.

very true.

I was thinking this short would be limited to 5 min anyhow.

Hell, take it further Tom. We start say here in Hawai'i since I started this. I film/edit a "Baraka" style piece and send it off to the next person who adds their chapter and so forth and so on. The project makes it around the world and becomes a RED World DVD.

This could work as well. Anyone else like?

hereis a twist, I think

Have the same script but different scenes shot by different people

I could see each person contributing 2~5 min set to a piece of music of his choice, that could amount to full-length feature "ala Baraka" or "Paris - Te Amo". We will need two things (off my head):

A) A producer/administrator who would deal with all the rights and coordination, etc... He/She could also represent the project to the market, so ideally someone with experience and/or good connections...

B) Post facility that would assemble the final piece to a distribution format and coordinate with all the individual creators about final touches...

I would love to contribute by offering the B, free of charge of course. In my business plan I have always allocated % of our production capacity for such a projects. It would be honor to do this and a use the "above-the-line" approach (evolution of the off-line / on-line mastering designed for collaboration between artist in different physical locations via internet...).

music is not always the problem, i know tones on fantastic royalty free orchestra scores all around the web, you can get it for as low as USD 14. editing music to the video is another thing. that involves a creative process. But we are not short of music pieces here.

You might not need a post facility. It's just for fun. Just have people encode their contributions as 1080p JPEG2000 files or Photo JPEG 90% or whatever, and upload them to a server, like redrelay.

Then various people can take a crack at editing pieces, and you can see who has the most editing skill.

I think you kind of need a theme, though. A theme and some nice music. Find an epic 10-minute song and let everyone contribute 20 seconds of footage, for example.

This concept has a lot of potential. However, IMHO the soundtrack would ideally come from one source or be composed or put together by one person so that the music can have a through line through the film with a series of builds, a crescendo and a rest.
