  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

codec error on release build 15

We got a codec error shooting a drummer on GS for a music video on B15 v2.2.5.

Shooting to RedDrive, RC36, 4K 2:1, 25fps @ 1/50th.

Seemed odd, as hardly high detail, given it was a GS shoot! Re-shot and had zero problems, so might have been a one-off.

Only my guess but perhaps the vibration of the drums caused the HDD to hiccup?

I got this twice 5 days ago shooting with redcode 28, so it seems its not only 36 related. If I understood correclty, this thing wont be solved till build 16,so basically the most stable build so far(and propably for the next month or so) is 13... I'm about to give my camera for a feature film in 10 days and wonder whats better for the production, dual monitor output, or hassle-free shooting...

wow got this eeror about 12 times yesturday...this time on the red drive...

shooting Music video...inside phx.... no Air...

8 of them where shooting the drummer in front of camera, and the only time the play back was piped through there amps...

was the Bass virating the platers in the HD?

yes I was shakeing camera a bit... yes the bass was preety heavy, yes I was getting the hot body warning...

grr whats going on?

I thought a hard drive problem would mean dropped frames, not a codec error. But maybe one causes the other. Red does suggest using CF instead of hard drive in severe environments (high motion and/or vibration). If the bass sound is very loud that certainly could affect the hard drive, after all it is a precision mechanical device.

we are also seeing the codec error sometimes on r15 on different red ones.
R16 hopefully should remove this nasty shotkiller.

I am also experiencing intermittent codec error shooting on 4K 16:9 (Shooting on Redcode28; have not tried Redcode36). It has happened several times but not always and I have also managed to record 4K 16:9 without any problems.

I have not been able to isolate the conditions in which the error results. The error happened with while using both CF cards and Red Drive.

Recording error 4 times today during feature film shooting. End of the day. Shooting 4k 2:1 Redcode 28, low detail scene. No temp warning. Red Drive. Switched to CF and it stopped. But WHY???

Still nothing from Red on how to prevent this from happening?

Build 16 right around the corner, but with RedCine delaying I can't upgrade as the post-pipeline will take severe hits.
