Just saw Cloud Atlas. I can't even say how impressed I was with it. Cinematography, Acting, Directing, VFX, Soundtrack, Casting, Makeup (My God the Makeup!) and everything else that went into it.

I can't believe it hasn't received more attention. There is zero promotion in Australia and I don't expect it to still be in theaters by next week.

I know it's long, I know it's hard to follow for some, but it should be mandatory viewing in schools, churches, government agencies and for anyone who appreciates brilliant filmmaking.

The creators should be damn proud, even if no one seems to get it.

I LOVED IT !!!!!! best film I have seen for years.

I also cannot believe AUSTRALIAN distributors have pushed it to the side... I watched it on a plane ride 3 months before it hit cinemas in AUS... I'm so glad I want to the cinemas again and watched it propper...
Brilliant film making !

Just got the Blu-ray today, can't wait to watch it!

Real good film. Really enjoyed it. I think Wachowskis raised something like 110 MILLION USD, privately, to fund it.. that is amazing.

I was really excited about this film, found it technically incredible but way too many problems how they approached the story. I know it was the impossible film to make and they gave it one hell of a shot but even all the sugar coated visual effects could not save me from out right bordem. I will try to revisit it.

Go see OZ... that may excite you. :)

I thought the book was alright. I have to agree with Vadim, I actually liked the movie better than the book. This is the Wachowski's best film, then again they only could go up after Speed Racer. hahaha...

Yes, the story had problems. Perhaps that's why I liked the movie better than the book. The book had some issues and the movie seemed to smooth over and eliminate many of them.

Loved it. Probably the best film of the year for me and one of the best in these past few years. An ambitious film that is delicious to watch, layer by layer. Every single time I see it I admire more and more the intricate details and simbolism. Masterpiece in my book and one for the history books. Thats what I call millions well spent for the sake of cinema.

I love this film. It's definitely in my top ten, probably more like my top three. The ambition, the scope, THE ACTING, holey moley, the actors are SO GOOD that they make it look easy when it's not, to play this many characters in a single film without ever relying on your brand iconography. The epic magnitude, the scale. THE EDIT, geez.

quite an achievement. I wish the market had more functional brain cells for receiving it. the reviews and criticism have been so whiny and dumb. too many genres in one film, wah wah.

CLOUD ATLAS, TREE OF LIFE, and SAMSARA are the closest things we have to sacred cinema in recent years. Everything else is just another story.

I absolutely loved it. I didn't really like Tree of Life but I loved cloud atlas--there was definitely a similar vibe between the two thematically but I loved the intertwined stories and I thought it was the first really amazing ground breaking film I had seen since The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

As to "only up" from Speed Racer?! Speed Racer was amazing. The best review I found of Cloud Atlas was that like Speed Racer they are both very 'earnest' films. And I think some people read earnest as pretentious and some people read it as cheesy but I like that the Wachowskis dare to throw aside irony and just make a story about something grand and meaningful without resorting to cheap shots or lazy depression. What's the famous quote? "It's easy to make the audience feel deep emotions, I would just kill a puppy."

I would put Cloud Atlas in my top 10 films of all time (although I'm not sure what to displace). And it definitely deserves some attention from film aficionados since it is so radically different from 'traditional' storytelling.

If nothing else it was incredibly brave to take that story on and have the responsibility of keeping the story focussed. I was thoroughly impressed and was never bored.

I think there was about 30 seconds where I didn't quite know what was going on. Not bad for an incredibly complex 172 minute movie!

Agree with all that. And Tree of Life didn't do it for me, either.

Hehe. What was so amazing about it? Maybe I've just seen it too many times... My kids were addicted to it for several months after its release. Then again, after seeing it the first time, I didn't have much desire to revisit it. And it left me craving pancakes.

I read your post about OZ...I will take your smiley face as a kind jab. To each their own. I am a minority here. I recall some of the scenes felt flat and or just hitting the nail on the head in case you were lost while others were brilliantly executed. Just when I got into one plot, I got sidetracked with some of the subplots (ie guy breaking out of the old persons home story, funny none the less) but overall It was visually breathtaking and certainly had its moments. Was a lot take in...bit of a mixed bag, like watching 5 movies crammed into one. I think my problem with the picture was i was thinking too much, and one review i read was this film is best to absorb without doing so. ;)

Yeah, for the first 10 minutes or so I was busy trying to make sense of everything. Then I realized that shouldn't be my job, and just let it all unfold. By the end I understood everything and made all of the connections that were breadcrumbed throughout the movie.

There really should be an intro before it starts, suggesting this. If you watch it is this it's an amazing experience. Still floored by it.

To each their own but I think if someone doesn't enjoy it then it's not the film's fault, just a matter of taste.

Got around to seeing it because of this thread, my expectations were low because I had heard so many negative reviews. I loved this movie, it was such a fun ride piecing all the stories together, loved the cinematography, the score, the art direction, each era having its own style, feel, look etc. So much to like, for sure going to give it a second viewing. Cant understand why there was so much negativity towards it.

I was scared off by the bad reviews, and I don't particularly like Tom Hanks.

I may watch it, but I highly doubt it's going to hold a candle to Life of Pi.

Strangely enough I saw Life of Pi with high hopes and was pretty let down. IMO it was a nice picture but nothing to write home about, it felt too "Disney" if that makes sense? I know I know Disney had nothing to do with it haha
