  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Clipfinder workflow for "wrapped R3D"

Hans - great tips so far.

For some workflows I'm thinking it may be useful to take advantage of Color's support for the proxy files. Not needing to re-wrap files just for the online could be useful at times.

Is it possible to use Clipfinder's conform feature to go from an XML that references rendered .MOV's back to _M or _H proxies?

Trevor,

This is currently not possible. But I think it's a brilliant idea.
I'll start working on it right away.

Many thanks

Clipfinder doesn't import any build 15 clips on my brand new macbook pro =/ compatibility issue? does it only work with build 16+ material?

No, it does work with build 15 material.
However, you may need to use REDRushes to re-build the proxies for all your build 15 clips. That's done the trick for me.

Let me know if this helps.

Hans

Clipfinder 2.1.6 - replace transcoded Quicktimes with Reference Files (Proxies)

Clipfinder 2.1.6 - replace transcoded Quicktimes with Reference Files (Proxies)

I have just released version 2.1.6 of Clipfinder.

It can be downloaded from www.daun.ch/software

This version adds the ability to conform FCP projects by replacing references to transcoded Quicktime files with references to RED reference files (proxies).

In the conform dialog, set "Clip Directory" to a directory that contains all of the .RDC directories for the clips you have used in your FCP project.

Feel free to mail me if you encounter any problems or have any questions.

Cheers,
Hans

This does work well, actually change your project settings to 2048x1024 and the whole image will be there (if you used _P)

I find that the playback performance in Color is considerably different between the new "wrapped R3d" files and the original proxy files with the sizing change. With full wrapped R3d's, setting the playback resolution in Color to quarter res will allow essentially real time playback in most cases (it sometimes has to ramp up, but it does work). Doing the same thing with resized proxies produces the same ultimate result, but will not play in real time.

mmost-

That is very strange because it appears to me that whether I use _P _M _H or the wrapped quicktimes I get back to the same R3D file in color so playback should be the same no matter what. Maybe certain settings of the project do not transfer well. I did have a challenge coming from an SD timeline where my footage was all "screwy" but when I used a 1280x720 or a 1920x1080 timeline it worked fine. (I think it was the pixel aspect ratio, and I could not find a place to change that in color ;)

Very strange playback would be any different, must continue to test.....

good luck

Hi there,

I just tried to do that and it works just fine... which is awesome.. if the file
name exactly matches one of the possible proxy extensions. correct?

Unfortunately I used a post-fix extension when I created my offline qt
references with red alert. That got added to the end of the each file name
which now seems to screw me up because clipfinder can't match the file name back to what it finds in the original rdm folders... think of something like A004_C029_080516_roll01_dvcprohd.mov

Do you think you could add the functionality to only try and match the first 16 characters of a clipname from the original fcp xml and ignore the rest of the characters?

Otherwise I think I will go ahead and start renaming my clips on disc and rename every single one in fcp...

Hi Hans,

thank you very much for this great application. With the abillity to use your new conform tool to change the XML of an _M quality proxy sequence to _H quality you just made a dream come true for me.

For a lot of projects I wanted to just edit with _M proxies and when the edit is finished conform the sequence to _H proxies, set the sequence to high quality 10 bit rendering and render out directly from the proxies which is more than enough for most SD projects.

I was trying to write a programm like that with the help of apple automator and apple script without having any knowledge about coding and after a lot of sleepless nights ended up with a version that did work but wasn´t nearly as elegant as what you did and too unreliable to be able to share it...

But I did encounter a few things that I would like to share, maybe they help you improve the funcionality of your conform tool.

- When you specify a filename for the new XML in your conform tool it is saved with the new name but the new XML still has the old filename on import into FCP. The actual filename that FCP reads is the filename saved in line 4 of the XML file. If you manage to change that it will appear with the correct name after import into FCP.

- It would be great to change all the clipnames in the XML file to the new quality setting. If you change the ending of the clipnames in the XML file from for example _M to _H than all the clipnames in the new sequence will show the correct proxy quality setting which makes it easier to see the changes that were applied.

Maybe you have already implemented this stuff but I thought it might help. Thank you again for your great work.

Cheers,

Kay

Kay,

Thanks for your suggestions.
My approach with the conform has been to change as few fields as possible so as to reduce the risk of unintended side effects.
However, I can see the value of what you suggested.
I'll put that on my list for the next version as an option in the conform dialog.

Thanks again
Hans

Have you ever had trouble getting Clipfinder to recognize the QT files?

You know, the conforming idea is great, but with a feature sized project, I'm concerned about the hard drive requirements for all those clips because essentially, you are copying the R3D and then also creating R3D wrapped files, therefore you now have 3 times the footage, no? It would be great to point to aliases to save on drive space.

I've done two features with Clipfinder where I only keep the one copy of the R3D material.

Say you edit with prores, then to conform to R3D, then you can just export the XML from FCP, read that with Clipfinder, then conform/save the new XML without duplicating the R3D.

As long as you keep your timeline simple, this ways would work and Clipfinder will fix the looping bug with the Apple Color if you see the edited spanned clip giving you problem.

Also, in case you want to go wrapped QT for some reason, then you can use the "move" function in Clipfinder to temporally move the used R3D to a location so that the log and transfer see only used R3Ds and put them back to where they were.

Hans,

I tried to do this with Monkey Extract but didn't work, so I wonder you can make it work with your Clipfinder.

Some clients with old Avid Media Composer tends to work only with tapes. So, I thought of making a tape for their offline editing by using the edge code, then have them export EDL, then conform the EDL to the original R3D using FCP, then grade in Color. Would that be possilbe with Clipfinder?

It is not possible currently.
Can you mail me an example EDL so I can see if there is a reasonably simple solution for this ?

Cheers,
Hans

Hans, thanks, I will prepare some data for you.

Also, about the 10-bit QT thing, I just remembered that when you install third party hardware like Blackmagicdesign, 10-bit RGB QT codec gets added to even the Clipfinder's rendering codec option, so Hans, I don't think you have to do anything. QT codec scheme does that work for you. So, if you add AJA software codec then you will get AJA 10-bit RGB QT codec listed in the codec choice. Only thing that I have that don't get listed is Cineform (neither in Redrushes but Redcine, but careful in Redcine, it exports Cineform in 8-bit according to Cineform). Hans, you can get together with Craig at Cineform to overcome this maybe.

Hi Kaku,

How is the image quality with Cineform ?
It could work well with Clipfinder ?
I ask this because with AJA RGB10 bit, i have big time gamma shift with this codec, no matter from what app it is output from.
Does Cineform stays with correct gamma ?

Thanks.

Antoine
