As my valentine's day gift to the RED community I have just put a new version of Clipfinder on my website at
http://www.daun.ch/software/
This version aims to take some of the pain out of the L&T workflow.
As you know, L&T makes very specific assumptions about the structure of the directory it ingests from and will not work if those assumptions are not met. My previous workflow recommendations for conforming from "proxies" or transcoded Quicktimes to wrapped Quicktimes (via L&T) therefore required copying RDC directories to a temporary directory in preparation for the ingest by L&T.
Thanks to a request from a Clipfinder user it occurred to me that by moving rather than copying clips time and diskspace could be conserved (as long as the RDC directories and the temporary folder were on the same disk, of course). Obviously, this would wreak havoc with your clip organisation scheme. But if you could move the clips back after ingest...
This is where the new features in Clipfinder 2.1.11 come in
- added "Move Clip Directories to..." to the file menu.
You use this to collect RDC directories for ingest via L&T. You'll need to proceed as follows
- Load clip list into Clipfinder from an XML document you exported from FCP.
- save the Clipfinder document (you will need it later to move the RDC directories back to their original location)
- select "Move Clip Directories to..." from the file menu
- use the file dialog to create a new directory (e.g. "Selects") ON THE SAME DRIVE that the RDCs are currently in and press the "open" button
All clips in the Clipfinder document will be moved (not copied) to the new directory. This will be so fast you'll wonder if anything happened at all.
The Clipfinder display will change to indicate that the clips can no longer be found (one-way-street icon). Do not worry about this. Close the document without saving.
You can now ingest via L&T from the folder you just created.
- added "Move Clip Directories back from..." to the file menu
You use this to move the RDC directories you collected for ingesting back to their original locations.
To do this, you
- open the saved Clipfinder document. The display will indicate that the clips cannot be found.
- Select "Move Clip Directories back from..." from the file menu
- use the file dialog to select the directory you created for ingesting and press the "open button".
The RDC directories will be moved back to their original locations.
The display will change to indicate the clips are (back) in the location they were when you saved the document.
I have also made the following change
- "replace MOV with R3D" will use only the first 16 characters of a file name to find the matching R3D.
If you decide to use the new features, please test your workflow on copies of your originals first !
Feel free to mail me if you have any questions or comments. My e-mail address is in the Clipfinder Help Pages (CMD-?).
Enjoy,
Hans
P.S. Many thanks to Andrew for the request that got me started on this.
