  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Clinton closer ad on TLS Panchro 75mm

Hello Erich,

I find the light setup interesing but one thing is disturbing me : as we can't see the black spot of the eye and some light reflection in it, it lowers the intensity of her look. It's like if she would be blind. Do you see what I mean?

See you.

Patrick

Yes, I get it. The dark spot is there but much smaller because the reflection is large and all around rather then just on one side which is more traditional.

Its a trade off, shadow-less verses the issue your mentioning. I do like the shadowless, and works well for an older woman, and I think that "trumps" the missing pupil in this case. (doh.... Trumps... :)

BTW, If Hillary had won the election I would not be sharing this story... just because.

I made the choice of lens. Usually I'll bring super speed lenses of some kind like Master primes. Its quite common that we end up with a back ground that's too close or just not ideal in some way and having the ability to make it soft as possible is a choice I want in the tool bag. In the past when using master primes Ive added a very light softening filter to combat the MP sharpness. The Last time we filmed Hillary I tried the 75 Panchro and was very happy so I brought it along should we choose a stop that could afford the extra light needed. I had the 75mm Master prime up and had the Director look at the shot and help me decide how much stop to use ie how much softness for the back ground. He was happy at almost exactly 2.3-2.5. So that was all I needed to swap to the Panchro which was my first choice, with no added softening needed.

Stormtrooper?

this was shot with Arri Amira

I know it was Amira. What I was asking was about was how that choice was made....and whether the Stormtrooper was in consideration. Thanks again for all the good stuff you have posted!

ah yes, sorry. We have in the past shot mostly Red for these President campaign shoots for the resolution, so they could zoom or cut to a tighter image. For the last 2 Hillary shoots they chose Arri and I questioned them on the ability to push as far as they have wanted in the past. In the end I had no problem with the choice, Amira's is a nice camera. They were tying their own hands in limiting the push.
