Claude Chabrol, the prolific French director and critic who was one the pioneers of the French New Wave and went on to produce a series of stylish, suspense-filled films like “Le Boucher” (“The Butcher”) and “La Femme Infidèle” (“The Unfaithful Wife”) that were often compared to the works of Alfred Hitchcock, died Sunday in Paris. He was 80.
“Stupidity is infinitely more fascinating that intelligence,” Mr. Chabrol once observed, “Intelligence has its limits while stupidity has none. To observe a profoundly stupid individual can be very enriching, and that’s why we should never feel contempt for them.”

Dave Kehr's obit is a really fine piece. A fitting farewell for a great filmmaker.

Sad news... A first class filmmaker.

Oh no...that is so sad. One of my favourite directors. It's so strange I just lent two of his films to a friend of mine tonight. Nada and Que la bête meure.

Such a wonderful filmmaker.

My favourite quote of his... "old wave, new wave, it's all the same ocean." rest in peace.

I'm going to have to do some renting I think, I looked through his directors credits and haven't seen any of these movies.

Well I definitely recommend pretty much all of his films, however my favourites are:

Just before Nightfall (Juste avant la nuit)
Nada
The Doe's (Les Biche)
Innocents with Dirty Hands (Les innocents aux mains sales)
This Man must Die (Que la bête meure)

To name but a few...

"The Ceremony" is pretty excellent, too.

Didn't really hit home with me how good his late 1960's period was. There are a lot of great films there.
