  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Clarification...

Jim

Given the additional complexity with respect to components for Scarlet - is there any chance that the Epic-S will move forward in the production plans ? I seem to remember that you mention that the Epic-S would go into production after Scarlet.

Thanks for the update

michael

Actually, it was scheduled to go into production after the Epic-X, but I honestly don't know anymore... Epic-S barely gets touched on these days.
Obviously there are updates on the Epic-X and Epic-M because they're next on the production schedule , but then the only talk that follows this is of.. the scarlet?

Jim posted this in the Official NAB Announcements thread. http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?57661-Official-NAB-announcements...&p=751746&viewfull=1#post751746

It seems hollow to post now about EPIC-S specs until we recover from the supply chain issues and get production rolling. EPIC-S comes after EPIC-X. The frame rates and date rates are less, as is the price.

As someone who's been waiting for the Scarlet S35 --now Epic S-- since it was first announced (and will wait as long as it takes, Jim), I keep an eye on comments about it. Jim (or Jarred) posted again recently that Epic-S will ship when they get caught up on demand for Epic-X. The last I heard, they expected that to be late September-ish. I think the reason you're seeing so much buzz about Scarlet is because probably more people want it than the Epic S, and because it's more in flux due to the turmoil in Japan.

Disappointing update for those of us that are waiting on the Scarlet. 100% understandable, but disappointing. I think think folks at RED are more disappointed than the ones waiting. Keep trucking along!! It is good to hear an update even though it is not what I wanted to hear.

So, any chance of a Scarlet Cine, detachable, not fixed update please? Are you going to put it into the EPIC line and call it an Epic 2/3? Are you getting rid of it all together? If so, please give us an update...

Thanks so much for the updates, greatly appreciated...will continue to work with my RED One till you guys get all needed parts and supplies.

Thankful that I bought my camera and have it to shoot with..waiting for good news on EPICM purchase...

Best,
Frazier

Its good to know whats going on, thanks for the update.

When you talk about missing lens-parts for scarlet, the idea of bringing Scarlet Interchangeable before the fixed version comes in mind. Also the idea of creating a bundle of interchangeable + this great lens as (temporary?) replacement for scarlet fixed could make now some sense too, especially if you're able to build bodies now and the lens is the only thing that stops you from production for longer than just a month or two. You could deliver working bodies/kits now and send out the lenses whenever you're ready... This kind of bundle doesn't have to replace fixed scarlet completely, it could be a limited offer for example.

Sure it would cost more than a fixed, but i don't think there is a problem with that.

Just thinking out loud, of course without knowing what those changes would mean in numbers and how much work they need or if its even possible to make them at all.
Well, i'm sure you guys have already considered all possible options, so don't take my thinking too serious.
Whatever you do, i can wait (even for more infos of epic-s). ;)

And thanks again for your open and honest posts, it's always a pleasure to read them.

It just occurred to me that I have bought two Sony cameras in the time I was waiting for SCARLET to materialise.
I hope I do not have to buy my third one soon! Oh well, and the batteries, chargers + stuff.

Great news Jim! Any possibility that the scarlet non-fixed lens will come out first now instead?

Seems the most popular sub-topic in this thread is a call to release Scarlet Cinema (interchangeable) before the Fixed, due to lens parts delays caused by the tragedy in Japan. Here's why I think that won't happen:

1. Scarlet Cinema needs lens mounts. Priority for those goes to Epic owners.

2. The only unique Scarlet Cinema mount is the mini-PL. That's useless without the Red mini-primes.

3. The Red mini-primes are most likely subject to the same optical component delays as the Fixed lens.

4. I think it's safe to assume the optical components that are delayed are the glass components.

5. Any glass components manufactured in Japan are affected by the continuing rolling blackouts. For many manufacturers, rolling blackouts mean a complete halt to production since production runs will be ruined by power interruptions. My best guess is Cosina is making the glass components. Their factory is located in the Tokyo suburbs. They subcontract to many companies - often secretly. They are a soup to nuts (sand to lens) manufacturer known to be capable of producing relatively low cost high quality lenses. It is well known they manufacture the Zeiss ZF, ZE lenses while Zeiss engineers do the QA. I don't know who else Red would be using who would be capable of hitting their price points and meeting quality needs. Thus the delays, lack of a replacement source, and inability to target a production date.

6. If I were RED, I'd be concerned that the Scarlets have the cleanest launch possible. Among other things, this means a launch with their lenses designed for their sensor. Even though it's targeted at professionals, the price points make them accessible to a much wider group than the Epic, including prosumers, hobbyists, wannabees, etc. (No offense - I'm in all those categories, as well as pro, depending on what project I'm working on). That's great in that more volume should mean lower prices. With Cinema there will be a lot of experimentation with great 16mm and 2/3" glass, and not-so-great glass that may be tried just because it can fit, with an adapter or two. I think it would be wise to first set a standard with the Fixed Zoom and the mini-primes.

On the other hand:

1. The whole nation of Japan knows the way forward is to get production rolling again. This is a culture built on cooperation and coordination as well as gamman (perseverance). Auto manufacturers, who also need constant sources of power, are talking of coordinating production runs and rationing power so they can take turns getting constant power for a week or two. Hopefully this will be a model for all industries that need extended periods of constant power. Hopefully the government doesn't get in the way.

2. If the components exist, maybe RED could launch a Scarlet Cinema beta program, so some selected users could try premium glass on it. If the big $ boys are interested, maybe a Scarlet-M (Cinema) program could be launched.

Just my thoughts. I'm just waiting for Scarlet Fixed. In the meantime I'm just renting the cheapest equipment that will get the job done (which for the type of paying work I do, is usually pretty cheap) and holding off on all personal projects.

And THANKS RED, for all you do!

Many people want to know what's up with EPIC and Scarlet production.

EPIC-X. We are frantically working on finding solutions to supply chain issues created by the tsunami in Japan. We have found alternate sources (as have all of the other major companies) of parts that were exclusively made in Northern Japan. All of us are just waiting and in line for these parts and pieces. It appears that a solution to the supply of these parts will allow production of EPIC-X to begin in earnest in June. We have a full production facility and 98% of the components ready and waiting to rock as soon as we receive these parts.

EPIC-M. We are making machined body parts and purchasing individual parts and pieces at extraordinary prices now to continue production of EPIC-M.

Scarlet continues to be an issue due to the fact that lens components from Japan are causing an issue and we aren't quite sure how long it will take to resolve. We will update as we have more info.

In the past we were late due to our own issues. Now we are late due to issues beyond anyone's control.

Jim

Unfortunately Jim didn't mentioned Epic-S in his "Clarification" report above!!!???

Seems to me somehow that RED lost its own ROOTS and that is just one of the main issues (there are a lot of them)

that were caused a sort of technical knockout (also referred to as a T.K.O.) at the last NAB show.

I would not talk and dig more deep about it now just because all the time the forums watchdogs are behind me...

Anyway I will soon opening my own blog (that I often refused for many years but maybe now it's a right time to have it... stay tuned).

Also I do not have intention to confront any of RED official decision making and it's just an opinion...

Not announcing doesn't mean what you think it means. Not wise to assume...

Sangin, it's pretty simple: He has no time frame for EPIC-S because the time frame for EPIC is not fully locked down.

No announcement means no information.

How has RED lost its roots? Its roots are with its early customers, all of who have the opportunity to buy EPIC-Ms. if you can't mass produce your product, and your best and favorite customers are throwing 580 $100 bills at you for pre-production prototypes, as a business owner you are going to accept them. Even as a human being you're going to accept them: they are your friends.

I'm a bit saddened by the fact that those who have the least money to spend are those who complain the most, while RED's most profitable customers are far easier to deal with. I'm not sure if I wouldn't "abandon my roots" in those circumstances. But to his credit, Jim is still supporting those like you and me, with laughably meagre budgets, with EPIC-S and Scarlet fixed. I suspect the latter will show up about when I can afford it :).

If you don't like it, talk to Mother Nature and tell her not to do any more of those tiresome natural disasters. It won't help but maybe you'll feel better :).
