Those three past days, I'm testing the little Raven. This camera is really interesting and exciting.

Yesterday, during a test shot of the sun I noticed one thing, like an artifact.
I thought this "problem" came to my lens (canon 35mm f2 IS) but the next day I shot with another lens (sigma 50mm Art), and the same artifact occurred.

This circle stay even if I change the focus. But it disappears when I change a lot the exposure.

Have you already seen this circle in the sun ? Is it the sun himself ?

Gioacchino

It seems like there are a few quirks with the Raven that are really making me wonder if it's worth the upgrade from Scarlet MX. The Scarlet may not have the DR, low-light, or color, but at least it's consistent and doesn't exhibit weird artifacts like this (and purple fringing, which the Dragon sensor seems much more sensitive to). Thoughts?

If it were me I'd upgrade. The pros far outweigh the cons.

I don't think Dragon is more sensitive to black hole. As I never saw this on the Epic-X Dragon. I think it's a firmware issue with the Raven but I didn't hear any official statements.
Gioacchino should contact RED and ask for an answer.

Thanks Pat for your time.
I will.

4,5K
23,976
ISO 250
RC 15:1
Aperture : 6.1
Lens : Canon 35 f2 IS
Vari ND Tiifen

Second Test :
4,5K HDRX (stop over 4)
23,976
ISO 250
RC 8:1

I said I think the Dragon is more sensitive to purple fringing. It's true this is the first time I've seen this kind of sun artifact from a Red.

Have you tried this at a lover compression?

I got the black hole sun as well. Bummer. I still love the camera otherwise. Suuuuuper versatile and amazing quality otherwise.

I tried many things.
A new setting of the redcode does not change the problem. The black hole is always present.
I also tested to changi the Iso but again it does not really change the problem. Maybe the effect can be better with high iso but the problem is still here.
Set the Color Temperature to the cold give a beneficial effect on the artifact. It disappears almost by putting the color to the colder temperature as possible. But even here we still see that the black hole is still a little far.
I made these tests with ND and without, with different lenses, different focus and different aperture.
But in any case the artifact is more or less there.

Some adjustment with the focus, aperture and very cold color temperature make the problem invisible even if the black hole is still here somewhere.

The only way I found to remove this black hole is to under exposed the sensor. If you under exposed the sky so the problem no longer exists in the high light.
If we want correctly (in my opinion) exposed the sky and get soft white clouds so the circle appears in the highlights (sun).

I could not say more for the moment.

If this problem is only on Raven Camera maybe can we have hope for a solution ?

Hello! I've noticed that the purple ring appears only when using RedLogFilm, if you select Red Gamma 4 it disappears. So I think it is not a sensor problem.

I have it on redgamma4 too. Different brands of lenses and never stopped down.
RED already said that they're looking into it, let's hope for a firmware fix!

I would really enjoyed.
But from my side the problem exists in red log film and in red gamma 4. No difference.

Let's hope they will fix this problem. I have noticed another bug too. If you set the monitor at 50hz the menù items change position in a random way, so I have to use the monitor always set at 60hz to avoid this. Does someone have the same issue?
