In an attempt to begin teaching myself lighting, I shot this small dinner scene on my scarlet. I wanted to keep the dialogue minimal and add some blocking. I was trying to get a similar look to some of the home interior shots from the latest season of Breaking Bad. I was really impressed by how the scarlet handled details in the darks at 320 ISO, I lit the wide with a arri 650 and 3 150s, I know now it would have ended up better with a china ball, the spread of the 150s really limits them to accent lights and hair lights. I feel like I was missing some separation from the background for the characters on the shoulders and the composition was student filmy, I'll go less standardized on my next attempt. Any criticism is welcome.

Don't be so critical of yourself, it's got some good stuff going on. The color tone is great, very moody. I agree that some backlight wouldn't hurt, especially on the girl's angle. It seemed the guy was the best-lit, good detail. His camera left shoulder kinda falls off into the dark a little. I think the girl and the two shot could be bumped a stop maybe? I disagree, however, that it was "student filmy"... most student films have no lead space in their composition of CUs, let alone a foreground object (the shoulder and wine glass). Maybe a camera slider would add a little to it but it wasn't bad.

I have no complaints. I liked the lighting, composition and, in particular, the performances. It even sounded good. Good job.
