Hello,

I'm planning to shoot a short for cinemascope release. I was first thinking of using 4,5k WS resolution but as the postproduction process includes Color as the finishing tool and would constrain the renders to a half debayer, I tought it wouldn't give "usable" results on a wide screen.

- I don't know yet if I should use 4HD format and crop it to 2,39 after the color correction to take advantage of a full debayer of the raws.

- Should I shoot 4,5k ws and make 2k dpx files with REDCINE-X wich I would color correct?

I would love to shoot 4,5k WS as it will also give me a bit mor of field of view wich is good to have in this project.

Any input is apreciated! Thanks.

Patrick,

If you shoot 4K and use color as the finishing tool then you can frame all of your shots for scope using custom guides. This might also be a good way to protect for FLAT as well.

While capturing 4.5WS is appealing, you are also limiting the horizontal resolution to 1900 pixels. It might be good to test some clips at full resolution to see what kind of a resolution hit you are taking. You might get a bit more wiggle room if you capture 4K over 4.5K in terms of how much you can reframe image around in post.

It's pretty tempting to capture 4.5K though.

2048 x 858 (if memory serves me well)

Just so that you'll get the most out of 4.5k WS... given that your glass doesn't vignette on the wide end with a bit of extra on all sides if you need to reframe...

Thanks for your answers.

To print to 35mm the cinevartor ask for dpx 10bit log at 1828*1556 pixels (when in cinemascope 2k resolution). So I think I'll go the 4k 2:1 route and crop it/squeeze at export to 2k (1828*1556). Trying to get most of the 4k starting resolution...
