Does anyone have first had experience with "Cinema Craft MP" ? I've read a handful of reviews basically saying for software encoding it's the best, but it's $800 bucks.

also, perhaps vs. Bit Vice ?

Getting high quality DVD's seems to be rather elusive. I realize that hardware dedicated compression yields the best results.... but certainly at a cost that isn't always justified depending on the project. I'd like to figure out the best software alternative.

I had a project I got stuck with the DVD authoring on 2 years ago, where the client insisted on putting 3.5 hours of special features on a 75 minute concert DVD.

This made for a main feature that had to be at 3.5mbits, if I recall. CinemaCraft was the only encoder that made for a decent looking final...it looked like 6mbit from Compressor.

My research on the subject told me that the old story about hardware encoders being unbeatable is not so true anymore, and CinemaCraft is considered one of the best encoders around, hardware or software. My experience certainly backs this up, I didn't think my client was ever going to be happy until I tested it.

Although I wish I could have just told them to give it up and face reality.

Cinema Craft MP is a wonderful product. We replaced our Digital Rapids hardware encoder with it over a year ago and have not looked back. The quality you can get out of it is outstanding, but you have to know how to use it. Encoding is a science in itself. You really need to test, test, test in order to get the best quality out of your workflow. For the money, you simply can't beat it.

An alternative might be Bitvice from Innobits. We used it for the screener of a very critical project from RED recently, with lots of close-ups, fast movement, very shallow DOF and accordingly lots of blurred areas.

Compressor exposed massive banding, while Bitvice looks just beautiful. It's very easy to use.
