Hello guys!

I was looking for a wireless follow focus for gimball work and handheld shots and stumbled upon the Cinegears solutions. I was very happy about the price, because beforehand I was checking BarTech, C-Motion, Heden etc.
But there is one thing that bothers me - sound of the motors. I checked all the YouTube videos I could find featuring Cinegears with real sound and couple of them were pretty loud for sound recording on set. It sounded that boom could pick the sound up really easily.
Searched through all the threads on RedUser and only one user commented on the sound, that it sounds a bit loud (or was it a question, I don't remember), but no one addressed it.
I found a comment on YouTube - a guy was asking Cinegears, are the motors quiet, and they replied, that the motors gets louder as you pull the focus faster, which isn't giving much clearance on this topic either.

So, all the users, owners or one-time-testers of the Cinegears - is the sound from the motors are not too loud for on set sound recording?
Thank you!

P.S.
As I live in Latvia, we don't have rentals to try out the focus systems. I can get my hands only on Heden and C-motion, but they are expensive comparing to Cinegears.

I owned both the regular and the extreme high torque motor from cinegear. Both are as loud as the original m-one motors for the analog bartecs. So if your familiar with them, your have a idea with sound. I have yet had a issue with sound department complaining on my motor noise. It would only be a issue if your shooting in a very small room. I'm very happy with my extreme motor and its been getting a lot of use lately.

In normal operation sound is not an issue. As with most systems on them market, if you're rotating the controller very quickly from end to end, you'll hear something. There was a very successful group buy that I put together with lots of users placing orders. Many of them are receiving their units, so you can chime in on that thread if you want to ask a question, but I've had mine for quite some time now and I'm VERY happy with it! I even use the system for gimbal work.

Yes, Chris, I found your group buy thread a bit too late, would love to get in on the group buy, but oh well. I will post my question there too, thanks!

Sadly there is not much possibility to do a research as it looks like the gear is new and Cinegears put low-quality videos with music - no way to judge the sound of the motors.

But Jon, your comment made me look brighter at the Cinegears as I don't want to spend fortune on the kit.

Hey Ivo,

I just shot a national spot earlier this month with the Cinegear system and I didn't hear one complaint from the audio department about the noise from the motor. We did film in several small rooms as well. What I observed from the project seemed like a pretty solid solution for the price.

I actually bought CineGears and will let you know my thoughts about it. It will arrive tomorrow.

The cine gears system is less noisy than a bartech and an m-1, and in many many years and many productions, not even the crotchetiest sound guy ever complained.

Sound is a non issue in real world scenarios.

Nick

Totally dig mine for gimbal work. Sound has not been an issue. I'd say it's one drawback is lag. For real quick racks especially on long lens some may find the lag unacceptable, especially If you were brought up on Prestons (which have no discernible delay). If they could ever solve this it would be a serious contender against high end systems.
