Even though I've read the promo material, I'm confused as to whether or not this breakout box is for AVCHD footage only, or, can it be used to monitor other formats such as Red and so forth?

Anybody know?

MXO2 mini is certainly not only for AVCHD for sure.
It supports ProRes, DVCPROHD, DV, Uncompressed 8-bit and 10-bit (HD and SD). It's also fine in playing back HDV through the HDMI out if the CPU power is powerful enough.
Also, if you are editing R3D proxies, then set your FCP timeline as Prores and setting the RT as unlimited RT as you normally set for R3D editing, it works well with 1k size editing with smooth playback (don't set the RT as dynamic for the frame rate, set it high for the frame rate and dynamic for the resolution). It supports 24PsF playback so it would work with most modern display with HDMI input.

The "Max" part of the box is probably confusing to you that you though it's for AVCHD, because Max provides the H.264 encoding acceleration.

So, say you edit R3D proxies using MXO2 mini Max to monitor, then if you quickly want to render H.264 based rush, you can send the timeline to the Compressor and choose the preset comes with the Max option then it will encode H.264 10 times as fast.
