does anyone know if there will be a cine-like gamma option on all versions of the scarlet?

I speak from being an HVX owner, and there is a cinema gamma option with it that many panny owners know and love.

It's all great the scarlet having big resolution and all these other specs, but none of it will matter if the image looks like video gamma :couch:

Does anyone know if the scarlet will have a cine-like gamma option? Does RED ONE have anything similar?

That's the beauty of RAW workflow. You can make the image look however you want because none of the image data is thrown away as with RGB. You choose ISO, white balance and can set the curves anyway you like.

I think he's asking if there will be something to the effect of a preset LUT that mimics the look in-camera ala the HVX. I can see a lot of the prosumer crowd wanting to shoot footage with a "cine gamma" look built-in and not have to worry about adjust curves after the fact. It's just like dialing in picture settings on a Varicam or F900 before recording. Obviously with RED we get a much more elastic image to work with after the fact, but I can understand a more casual shooter wanting to load a preset gamma before rolling and just be done with it. The base scarlet is going to attract a totally different market than the RED ONE did, and some of those "automatic" features would probably be good things to include - especially since there's so much power to adjust them later with the RAW workflow.

When they move to a universal format for in camera, red alert, and red cine look format, then this won't be as much of an issue because you can make your own look in RA and then send it off to the camera.

Scarlet also shoots 1080p RGB, remember. It will have the look baked in on that mode.

It would be pretty cool, if one could i.e. create a look in Redcine, including curves etc. adjustments, and bring that back to Scarlet as a preset look.

We could have not just built in cine gamma, but a LOAD of different kinds of cinelook presets, which could be shared over the net.

My HVX has served me well.

I really need to take a course on the Red so I'm ready for the workflow.

RGB doesn't necessarily mean you're producing a fully processed video image with crushed blacks, rolled off highlights, a color matrix designed to produce a pretty result, etc. It could just mean you're de-bayering in-camera, but storing linear sensor data in an otherwise largely unmodified form -- sort of "raw RGB", like what the Viper shoots in Filmstream mode (except the Viper doesn't need a de-bayer step, since it's a three-chip camera).
