Does anyone know if Christian Berger used his Cine Reflect Lighting System on The White Ribbon?

I am interested in the system but don't know if it is something that is actually available for rental, yet. I find the process interesting, if a little tedious - but all lighting could be considered tedious to some. But there is something that draws me to the idea.

Here is the rental address, call the company and ask, they are very open and easy to talk to. I have never rented it, but used it in a clinic with Christian Berger at the Danish Film School. It is a wonderful system indeed.

I have been in talks with these guys about doing workshops here in the US. Let me know how many of you would be interested as it would certainly speed things along if we knew there was a lot of people interested.

And yes, the system was used on The White Ribbon.

Wow... Thank you for pointing me at this. I really admire Berger and havn'nt been aware of this system. I don't know but maybe some German redusers would be interested in a demonstration aswell? In Berlin for example? Me definetly! I really would like to know how the different reflectors work. How do I controll the amount of light - do the different reflectors absorb different percentages? How intense is the light falloff etc. ...
Does anyone know the price or rates by now?
Otherwise I will give them a call on Monday

I do like the look of the system but the only negative I heard is that small movement in the reflector means a large movement where the light falls, so strong winds are no no. Maybe there's a way to tighten it down if the wind gets up.

Dear all,

This Bernhard from Pani in Austria. We are the company manufacturing the CRLS with Christian Berger.
Since this thread was started with The White Ribbon, I will do the same.
Yes, the movie had up to 8 Panibeams and quite a number of reflectors on the set and only the burning barn scene was shot with something else (couple of Arris, as far as I know)
We've been pretty much caught by surprise by the popularity and the success of the movie and had to deal with it in rather short time.
Thus instead of rushing things and going public with a not finalized product, we decided to wait on an bit and sort out all those theething troubles- which is about 98,62535 % done as of now ;-)
Whereas the system is starting to getting spread around Europe, as Ryan has pointed it out, it is not yet available in the US.
However, you can expect to get a whole lot more presence over the next 6 month in many places to see the system, try it and discuss it.
If you want to be put on the mailing list so that we can keep you posted about seminairs, shows, workshops and such, just use this contact form http://cine-rls.com/?t=sales and we'll keep you in the loop.
And in the meantime, we are fully available for whatever you may want to know about the system.

All the best and a great weekend,

Bernhard

Thanks for chiming in Bernhard!
Do you at this Stage allready have a info about pricing.
Rental aswell as buying of a 1.2 panineam and a "standard" set of reflectors?
Also is there a workshop planned in Germany or is it possible to organize one with you together?

Thanks for the details Bernhard.

Is it possible to order the reflectors yet? If so, I'd like to find out about pricing and availability.

I was lucky to get on the Workshop with Christian Berger at the Berlin Talent Campus this year, showing and explaining how he uses his system.

I was, like all the other participants, blown away by how creative you can get by playing with the reflectors. Instantly your child 'try and error' instinct gets awaken, and placing light spots all over your set, lets you feel a little bit like Vermeer. ;)

I'm really looking forward to use it on a future project.

Wow- that sounds like quite an opportunity! It would be great if a class like this was made available on DVD / Download ...

They have the taped lectures up on the Berlinale Talent Campus site.

But unfortunately the Workshop wasn't covered, it would be cool to watch for a lot of people.

A few pictures I took with my phone to get an idea.

Thanks for the pictures and the link- lots of good stuff there. :)

I hope someone puts together some sort of resource for this lighting system, as it really interests me. And I'm sure lots of others as well.

Thanks for the response everyone! When I first heard about it on Cache, it intrigued me. In true Alton style it seems to be a unique way to paint with light.

Thanks Bernhard. I am shooting a thriller in Poland and Paris next year and would love to experiment with it for that. Not shooting much for the rest of the year, too much effects work and feature development to do.

Will sign up for info.

This system is amazing. I saw it first on the set of The White Ribbon and was instantly blown away. It will be definitely in my next feature.

If you need any help, drop me a line.

I'm hoping to kill two birds with one stone - shoot a promo and experiment with this kit at the same time, next Easter in Paris. If the dynamic doesn't change I'd be more than happy to have another head to explore it with. keep you posted.

Tim

Any update...?
