  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Christian Bale goes off on DP

seriously, that audio is fantastic, does anyone have any idea how they cut that? obviously they weren't following him around with a boom...

that'd be his lav

Bale was yelling so that would help his audio on the boom mic. (Probably not a lav IMO.)

The DP was probably standing close to the boom mic.

You can hear that the director's audio is not as loud+good.

The set might have low background noise... this can really help audio.

2- Back on topic... I agree with pliny here.

My two cents:

* We've all felt this way about a DP at one point in our lives.
* Mr. Bale may indeed have had his actor mojo majorly stepped on.
* You still never, ever talk to another human being like this.
* The director's name is McG.
* McG.
* No, really, McG.

Is McG the new "Alan Smithee"? :shifty:

I heard it this morning and my initial reaction was - how unprofessional all around. Bale could have walked off the set and addressed it with the director and AD, threatened to not come back until they worked it out with the DP. Instead, he chose to go off in front of everyone.

But, I agree with others that we don't know what the context is. Maybe there was other stuff said, maybe it started off civil and turned heated after an exchange. Who knows. But it shouldn't be leaked. If it was the sound team that leaked it, that too was unprofessional. Some heat of the moment incidents are best left on set, not broadcast to millions. It doesn't instill much trust in your crew.

Apparently the audio recording was sent to the productions insurance company is case Bale did walk off set... and someone at the insurance company leaked it...

Theres a general rule, what happens on set stays on set. If you didn't like your experience with someone, you don't work with them again.

Given how the audio was "leaked", I'm thinking this could very likely be the case. I'm just not entirely sure though because it makes Bale look (or sound) like a complete ass.

Does anyone believe that a quite unknown DOP would take the risk to get his reputation as a professional spoiled? I don`t believe this is marketing, because a fight with McG would be much more "effective" and would do less harm to his reputation since he has none.

In this case there`s not much difference between the on-set Bale and that one who`s in the yellow press.

Then again...when the sound department lets a recording like that get leaked, it seems like revenge for more than one incident of bad behaviour, doesn't it.

I think it got leaked after, but not by the sound dept.......producers had it up their sleeve for insurance purposes...in case, Bale walked off the set at some point during principal.

And then at the opposite end of the spectrum is the story of Sissy Spacek, who after doing COAL MINERS DAUGHTER stayed in character and kept the accent for six months.

Hahaha reminds me of Tropic Thunder where Robert Downey Jr. says after some moon movie he made playing Neil Armstrong, they found him trying to re-enter earth's atmosphere in a refridgerator box in an alley in Burbank, haha.

I suppose I just have a different approach than Christian. If I was in his place and this continued to happen with the DP, I simply walk off the set, talk to McG and the producers and tell them I am unable to do my job until a policy is in place that prevents the DP from tweaking lights during a take. If that is what he did and the DP continued to do it, then maybe this outburst was warranted. Although it's funny to listen to, it's unfortunate this got leaked. Without knowing what really led up to this, it's hard to know exactly what to think.

Unknown? Huh? How is a DP that has done 14 features an unknown?

Jeez tough audience here :-)

He called Kevin and Bean on KROQ here in LA this morning and appologized. He said it was uncalled for and her was just having a bad day and exploded and he souldn't have. He said he doesn't think he's better than anyone else and said that so many people worked hard on the movie. He also said he didn't bully Shane and it wasn't going to get physical. Not to mention he said Shane is an ex-football player and a big guy and would have whipped his ass, haha. The phone call will be posted on their website later today: http://www.kroq-data.com/kevinandbean/

Bale's radio apology was extremely classy. Getting "into" the character of John Connor would probably make us all act in unexpected ways.

Michael. I mean "unknown" in the sense that he is not on par like Roger Deakins, Emmanuel Lubezki, Dariusz Khondji, David Tattersall, Rodrigo Prieto etc., Mr. Hurlbut didn`t do as much movies nor that many "classic" ones as the mentioned (at least in my humble opinion, since nobody I spoke to (all from the field of motion pictures) ever heard of him - which may not mean that much, but still... ;-)
