As a proud Sony EX1 owner for over a year now, I was thrilled to discover the release of the Redrock M2 Encore. However, there seemed to be numerous users of this combo that complained about sharpness issues and backfocus problems...not to mention the weight and bulk.

Since I already have a big lump of cash in the bank, I'm going to hold out for the RED Scarlet 2/3" + miniRED primes. I want to pursue cinematography, short films, film festivals, etc. I am a senior college student, and run a mildly profitable business shooting weddings with the EX1.

My questions are:

1) What is a ball park figure for a RED Scarlet 2/3" + a few miniRED primes (say, 8mm, 16mm and 25mm) including all the basic necessities (LED screen, battaries, controls, etc.) I know there was a thread on this, but I can't seem to find it. Some people have said "over $10,000 for a full setup" but I already have tripods and decent LED lighting.

2) What is the Scarlet's color bit depth? I remember reading somewhere that 35mm film is 14 bit, and the EX1 is only 8 bit.

3) Should I sell my EX1 upon the RED Scarlet's release, or should I hold on to both? Can you shoot a wedding with a RED Scarlet 2/3"?

I am interested in the RED Scarlet in order to study and practice cinematography and a much higher level. I am a huge fan of Conrad Hall and his work, including American Beauty (which in my opinon is one of the most perfect movies ever made.) I feel like the EX1 (even when paired with a 35mm adapter) would be sub-par. But I still need to shoot weddings in order to bring in the $$$. On top of all of this, I also shoot stills, and have a handsome collection Canon "L" lenses. However the FF35 Monstro is way out of my budget.

Thank you so much,
Andrew Huse

We don't really know this because no prices other than for the brains have been announced yet.

12 bit color depth.

I would keep shooting weddings with the EX1 until you are thoroughly familiar with Scarlet's performance and workflow requirements.

If you already have a good selection of Canon L lenses you might want to consider the S35 model and see how that prices out compared to 2/3" plus lenses. Lots of R1 shooters are using Canon lenses on the Birger mount with superb results.
