  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Chinese Ball + LED ?

Here is David ORussel's best BTS ever

Yeah, that moment almost ruined his career. He couldn't get work for years until Wahlberg doubled down on him for The Fighter.

That said, he seems to have really turned it around - and he seems well liked again. Which is good. He's making good movies, and the vibe seemed loose on American Hustle. Hollywood is certainly fond of redemption stories, and he is clearly finding his footing again.

Christian Bale has certainly bounced back from his meltdown, it actually enhanced his reputation for being an intense emotionally invested "All In" style of actor. The best part of the story is that Shane and
Christian got over it in 15 minutes and continued production like nothing happened and finished the movie ahead of schedule.

That is a mad cool rig.

May not be what you are looking for but it is an inexpensive alternative. I used dewalt flashlights with 2" pvc conduit. I bought some led strips from amazon 3200k and 5500k that has sticky back on it. A little PVC glue and solder and bob is your uncle.

Love it!

i was debating with my gaffer friend he thinks LiteRibbon is unnecessary and expensive.Any cheaper options against Litegear leds? Starting from 1000$ its a lot money for me to waste on LEDs.

Actually I think there is. You can pick up ribbon lights in 5 meter strips here:
http://www.amazon.com/HitLights-Fle...cluded/dp/B005GL5R56/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Ok, you can't switch color temperature, but they are dimmable, around 6000K, and best of all they are $12 a strip. I think at the price I can live with a lack of perfection.

@Andy

Thanks for pointing out those specs.Checking litegear products in last few weeks (after American Cine. article) wish they were cheaper than 1K prices.

Check these out:

Look familiar?
Same manufacturer in my opinion. Brightest LED strips out there, for architectural and industrial use. 1020 Led's per 5 meters. $300
12000 lumens per reel. That's the equivalent of quite a few Litepanels in terms of output.

I read the same article on the LED China Ball. Any chances of a light ribbon that changes color temp? I would love to have one for my kit.

The vho pro hybrid (Literibbon) is variable colour temp.

There's specs on the Lite Ribbons here - http://www.litegear.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/LiteGear_VHO-PRO_brochure_R8.pdf

An interesting product - going to see if they're available in the UK now :)

Cheers! 95 CRI on the litegear units apparently (though of course CRI isn't a perfect measure of colour for discontinuous spectrum lights like LED). I don't believe for a second though that any architectural/industrial equivalents will come close to that level of colour accuracy. And I'm sure it's the colour-rendering of the Litegear LEDs that explain the vastly higher cost.

Personally I think colour-rendering is paramount for my lighting, so I think the extra expense is justified. The flexibility of the strip lighting is what I find really exciting.

And I think it's important to remember that 'cost' and 'value' are not the same thing!

Believe whatever you want to believe. It's the same product.
I took a second look at the pricing of the lite gear stuff for an individual strand at 5m. It's actually slightly cheaper at $288. The industrial ribbon costs $300. Still believe that cost and value are not the same thing?

So no biggie in the end.

Same components, lengths, color temperatures, both guaranteed for 100,000 hours and the same price. Believe me they came from the same place. The same factory in China. You can get 100,000 meters of it on Alibaba as well by the way.

What this does reveal is that the idea that Litegear has produced these specifically for videographers and filmmakers is a pile of malarky and marketing. Perfect skin tones, my arse. A TM is not the same thing as PP. Architects don't take these things lightly either by the way. Industrial applications and architects are precise. Both are 6000K for daylight and 3200K for Tungsten. I am 99.9% sure tbat if you put a color meter in front of both of them you would find they were the same.

What litegear does is bundle these in packages (kits) and add dimming controls.
Same stuff, different market.
